Trump pitches softer line on immigration: 'fair and humane'

On Saturday, Trump met with a Hispanic Advisory Council at Trump Tower in NY and mentioned a "humane and efficient" way to deal with undocumented immigrants, according to Buzzfeed.

He also called Trump's new campaign manager, pollster Kellyanne Conway, a "great political thinker".

"What he supports is to make sure we enforce the law, that we are respectful of those Americans who are looking for well-paying jobs, and that we are fair and humane for those who live among us in this country", Conway told CNN's Dana Bash. When pressed by Bash to say whether Trump has made a decision to drop mass deportation from his menu of solutions, Conway responded: "To be determined".

Trump met with Hispanic supporters at his Trump Tower headquarters in NY on Saturday, when several participants told Spanish-language network Univision that he said his plan will include finding a way to legalize millions of undocumented immigrants. In a meeting on Saturday with his newly formed Hispanic advisory panel, Trump asked to hear their policy ideas.

By saying Ailes has no role with the campaign, Conway was threading a needle.

One of the hallmarks of Donald Trump's campaign has always been his tough stance on undocumented immigrants who came into the USA illegally. His replacement, Conway, was joined by the addition of Stephen Bannon as chief executive officer.

Trump brought Conway and Breitbart News' Steve Bannon in to run the campaign amid declining poll numbers and a controversy over former campaign chair Paul Manafort's ties to Ukraine's former regime.

Appointing the head of a blog that celebrates Trump's every provocation sparked coverage suggesting the candidate was resigned to "losing in the "most destructive way possible", as the Daily News put it.

Word of the announcement comes from a campaign aide who was present for the meeting but wasn't authorized to discuss internal campaign strategy and spoke on condition of anonymity.

"And we appreciate people being able to see Hillary Clinton's plan and Donald Trump's plan and see who will get the middle class tax relief".

"He's expressed his regret publicly and said, if I have caused you personal pain - that can include me, that can include you - that he regrets that", Conway said.

Conway also defended Trump's attempted outreach to minority voters.

Although Trump has insisted in the past that he does not prepare for debates, Conway said they had begun "debate prep" for his three expected debates this fall with Clinton.
