Spacewalking astronauts installing new door for visitors

The last USA spacewalk was on January 15, when a problem with American Tim Kopra's spacesuit allowed a small amount of water to build up inside his helmet by the end of the outing. A much bigger leak, from the suit's cooling system, nearly led to a spacewalker's drowning in 2013.

"As an astronaut who lived aboard the ISS myself, I am particularly interested in human research beyond low earth orbit and the use of the space station as a test-bed for technology demonstrations that will eventually support Nasa's increasingly ambitious missions to deep space".

Nasa is describing the new kit as "a metaphorical gateway to a future", while ISS's operations manager believes it is a "very significant milestone on the path to establishing commercial crew capability".

SpaceX is aiming for a test flight of its souped-up Dragon with two astronauts as early as a year from now. Boeing is aiming for a two-person test flight of its Starliner capsule in early 2018.

Once the docking adaptor is installed and SpaceX and Boeing start flying to the Space Station, it will restore NASA's ability to bring its own astronauts to the lab from us soil.

NASA divested itself of cargo deliveries a few years back, hiring private US companies to carry out shipments. The influx of commercial launches to the ISS would reduce NASA's involvement in the project.

They also plan to route cables to Harmony's upper port where a second IDA will be attached in 2018.

Launched to the ISS back in July by one of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets, the IDA is a large metal ring with a 160 cm diameter (63 inches).

Accused Olympic chief released from hospital for questioning
Mr Hickey had previously denied any wrongdoing in the OCI's role in securing or using an authorised ticket reseller for the Games. In December 2005, a security chief at the Bangu 3 prison became the fifth official from the jail to be murdered in five years .

According to a report in Nature World News by Sky Selrach, "The announcement was made during a press conference held Thursday by NASA Deputy Associate Administrator for Exploration Systems Development, Bill Hill". Another one - cobbled together from spare parts - should fly up in about a year.

The new port will allow astronauts traveling with companies such as Boeing and SpaceX to enter the station.

Rubin and ISS Commander Jeff Williams spent 6-and-a-half hours installing the door, which will be used by Space X and Boeing.

Due to broken communication with Williams' right ear piece, additional minor "go ahead" tasks were called-off and the two astronauts headed back to the space station's airlock around 1:30 EDT (1730 GMT). Rubins and Williams will be performing another spacewalk at the beginning of the month of September.

Rubins is the 12th woman to do a spacewalk. These test flights - meant to go all the way to the space station and dock - will last about two weeks. Awarding multiple contracts provides more options and reduces risk through a variety of launch options and mission types, providing the station program a robust portfolio of cargo services that will be necessary to maximize the utility of the station.

"If you look at the original plan, it envisioned the launch of Multipurpose Laboratory Module to the ISS, and only then a crew increase".

In a NASA's blog post, the Agency explained that the enterprises participating in the brainstorm demonstrated how their proposals would work in the ISS from a business perspective.
