USA to face Cuba in historic friendly match

In a sign of goodwill, Cuba invited the United States to play a soccer friendly in Havana for the first time since 1947 (the US last played in Havana in 2008). It was Green's second goal ever for the USMNT, the first being the strike against Belgium at the 2014 World Cup.

Klinsmann has recalled three German-born players - midfielder Danny Williams, defender Timmy Chandler and Bayern Munich winger Julian Green - for the first time since May, while he has also opted to experiment in goal, bringing in David Bingham, Ethan Horvath and William Yarborough.

The USA came out playing fairly well in the second half after a lackluster opening segment, though it was Cuba who almost struck first. The 21-year-old scored his first USMNT goal in April, 2015 against Mexico. The score came after Julian Green's shot attempt was deflected wide of goal and Wondo finished off the rebound attempt.

"Tried to go one against one and take some shots", Green said.

HISTORIC IN HAVANAWhile the teams have played each other 11 times in their history - with the USA holding a record of 9-1-1 against the Cubans - visits to the island are exceedingly rare.

The U.S. team was nearly at full strength - other than Ethan Horvath making his debut in goal and Green getting a rare chance on the left flank - in preparation for the final stage of World Cup qualifying that kicks off in November.

The United States play another friendly on Tuesday, Oct. 11, against New Zealand at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.

Israelis, world leaders gather for Peres funeral
As Abbas arrived, Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, greeted him. "Be at peace, Shimon, dear man, exceptional leader", he said. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas was also there, shaking hands with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The U.S., which relied on long passes to avoid the challenging surface, improved to 10-1-1 against Cuba but this was just its third match in Cuba following a 1947 exhibition and a 2008 World Cup qualifier.

Standing out as the United States one bright spot was 33-year-old San Jose Earthquakes striker Chris Wondolowski.

Cuba has not done well against the U.S. in global competitions but did have a reasonable showing, losing 1-0, when they squared off in Havana in 2008 for in a 2010 World Cup qualifier. Right back DeAndre Yedlin returned from a one-game suspension, central defender John Brooks recovered from a back injury and 21-year-old midfielder Julian Green made his second start and first since September 3, 2014, at the Czech Republic.

In defense look for former Seattle Sounder DeAndre Yedlin to lock down the right back role paired with John Brooks and Geoff Cameron in the middle.

"There's a lot at stake for the players to make their case, to show where they are right now", said Klinsmann.

The US got a fright of another kind in the 80th minute, when Steve Birnbaum was kicked in the head by a leaping Cuban player. According to Ian Darke and Taylor Twellman on the ESPN2 telecast, there is no running water and the field is maintained with a regular lawn mower like you or I would use.
