Police Officers Shot In California Shootout

A Whittier police officer shot while conducting a traffic crash investigating has died at an area hospital.

A police officer has died and another officer was wounded following a shootout with a suspected gang member Monday in California, PIX11 sister station KTLA reports.

Police returned fire, wounding the suspect. The slain officer's name was not released.

It was not immediately known what prompted the shooting.

Los Angeles County Fire Dispatch Supervisor Art Marrujo said paramedics treated two police officers and one other individual for gunshot wounds. The wounded officer, whose name was not released, was listed in stable condition. Police later found out that the vehicle the man was driving had been reported stolen.

The suspect was also struck by gunfire and was transported to a hospital in an unknown condition.

Severe storms pushed at least three tornadoes through parts of San Antonio overnight, ripping the roofs off homes and damaging dozens of other houses and apartments, causing minor injuries, authorities said Monday.

Eight buildings in an apartment complex were severely damaged, Woodward said.
