Does Turkey Think Trump's Resolve in Syria is Weakening?

Iraqi forces in west

In an unusual move after days of border clashes between the Turkish army and YPG that followed the air strikes, the USA sent military vehicles to the Syrian side of the frontier to carry out patrols in an apparent bid to prevent further fighting.

US forces, accompanied by Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) fighters, drive their armored vehicles near the northern Syrian village of Darbasiyah, on the border with Turkey on April 28, 2017.

The United States is aligned with People's Protection Units, or YPG, and the Peshmerga in Iraq - both Kurdish groups. Erdoğan vowed that Turkey will continue operations against the PKK and the YPG, similar to strikes earlier this week on Mt. Sinjar in northern Iraq and Syria's Mt. Karaçok. The Kurdish fighters are close to the Kurdistan Workers' Party in Turkey, which is an insurgent group designated as a terror organization by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the U.S.

Turkey and the United States can join forces to turn the Islamic State group's defacto capital of Raqa in Syria into a "graveyard" for the militants, the Turkish president said on Saturday.

The Turkish airstrikes, which also wounded 18 members of the USA -backed People's Protection Units, or YPG, in Syria were criticized by both the US and Russian Federation.

"We are working on this and we are coming to the end of it. God willing, in the near future, we will most likely remedy this with an emergency decree", Kurtulmus said, adding "God willing, we will meet these societal demands".

The patrols, which began Friday, are being led by US special operations forces, a USA official told CNN. "If we do not work together against terrorism, then tomorrow it will strike at another ally", Erdogan said.

Turkey has made clear it will use force to prevent the development of a Kurdish-controlled area on its Syrian doorstep. The YPG issue has been a source of tension between Ankara and Washington for a long time.

More U.S. troops were seen Saturday in armored vehicles in Syria in Kurdish areas.

Mr Erdogan said the sight of American flags in the convoy alongside YPG insignia had "seriously saddened" Turkey.

Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to visit the White House in the coming weeks, and the strain between Washington and Ankara over the YPG likely will be a topic of discussion. "From the Canton of Efrin to Cindirês, and further to Dirbesiyê of the Cezire Canton, many points of our forces were attacked by the Turkish army", the YPG said. "This is a message from the United States to Turkey to stop attacking the YPG, since they fear this could threaten the anti-ISIS Raqqa operation", he added.

Turkey, however, has remained hostile to the Kurdish People's Protection Units, known by their Kurdish acronym the YPG, which form the backbone of the SDF.

"We hope that this military mobilization is not meant to provoke our forces or for another goal linked to entering Syrian territories".

USA officials say the troop movement is part of its operations with the Kurdish forces in northern Syria. However, some have gone to the Manbij area hoping that they wont be attacked by Turkish backed insurgents should the Turks decide to try and dislodge the Kurds.
