Health Department announces Mental Health Month

The fair aims to give people support if they are suffering from mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression.

Central England is also creating 50 mental health and wellbeing champions who will offer support by signposting colleagues towards resources and help regarding mental health. We have heard from students, faculty, administrators and others that there is a rising demand for mental health services on campus. It can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges. Sometimes a person might respond after knowing you are consistently there for them.

Deb Matthews, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development, and Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, were at the University of Toronto today to highlight $6 million in additional funding for three years to support mental health services and supports at Ontario's colleges and universities.

The regional affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness endorsed the training.

The month of May is used to help people understand how common it is. "They are not willing to engage and provide a human contact with these people who desperately need it and get them to a licensed professional", she said.

It also aims to build on the Ministry of Health-funded Equally Well programme - which looks to improve the overall physical health of people with mental health and addiction issues.

According to mental health advocates at school, some may be reluctant to seek treatment because the Medical School Promotion and Review Board-which can require a student to withdraw or recommend expulsion-can take mental health into account while considering student cases.

"Our First Annual Essex County Mental Health Awareness Day is an opportunity to break down the stereotypes and overcome the stigma of mental illness".
