James Gunn Had To Fight For One Guardians Of The Galaxy Actor

Gunn may be a far superior superhero storyteller to DC helmsman Zack Synder (one franchise over, and to the right), but the endless fight sequence capping "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" evokes the endless-prime climax of Snyder's "Man of Steel".

What a difference three years and $773 million at the global box office make. But the magic, though not entirely gone, has taken a serious hit, done in by a combination of prosperity and anxiety. He expresses his initial disappointment toward his role as Drax in the film. The film is good at doing what superhero movies are supposed to do, which is offer up escalating spectacles meant to bring audiences back for more. It's behind one such battle that Kurt Russell makes his entrance as Ego, Peter Quill's (Pratt) long-lost father. More on that later. Sure, Guardians 2 tries to give Drax's comments a silver lining (he tells Mantis that because she's supposedly unattractive, she will know if someone truly loves her, since they will have to look beyond her looks, and that is a gift), but it doesn't excuse what he says. When splendid songs like Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain", George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord", Sam Cooke's "Bring It on Home to Me" and Cat Stevens' "Father and Son" are blended with the action, we forget how dispiriting and top-heavy the film's music-less moments can be. The effects (which are kick-ass even in the background) and the action that most films would place in the foreground is simply a backdrop here.

The film has five of them.

It doesn't start out that way, however.

If you pick apart the story in isolation, Guardians 2 is the weaker of the two films. Gillan in particular does an excellent job with Nebula's rage, pain and obsessive determination to eliminate her father from the universe.

Three years ago, James Gunn and Marvel became superfriends, making use of inspired casting, crisp writing and some classic '70s jams to make "Guardians of the Galaxy" the most fun-to-be-had at the movies in 2014.

"That's the one thing we miss in Hollywood movies". With a crew like this, it was fitting the first film included a lineup scene. Ego proves to be a dark character who has his own planet and a barrel of secrets to go with it.

The first film established that Peter's mother died when he was young and that a Ravager named Yondu (Michael Rooker) nabbed him off planet earth and forced him into a space pirate's life. Not because Rocket is the main character or focal point of the comics or the film but rather because Gunn needed audiences to buy in 100 percent to this creature who had been taken apart and put back together or they wouldn't likely buy into any of insane "Guardians" universe. Their extended antics are nowhere near as amusing as the film imagines.

Speaking to website Collider, she said: "The Guardians were on set from the very first day". A third film is already being promoted and going back to the roots would not be a bad idea.
