Newcastle win Championship, Blackburn relegated on dramatic final day

Blackburn Rovers fans are dejected after the final whistle during their English Championship soccer match against Brentford at Griffin Park London Sunday

Rovers are now in the bottom three now, locked on 48 points with Nottingham Forest, but having a worse goal difference by just one goal.

The 1995 Premier League champions went down on a dramatic final day of the Championship season, as despite beating Brentford 3-1 at Griffin Park, victories for fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest and Birmingham City put them down on goal difference.

I was really surprised that night that there was so many Rovers fans because I was coming into the club on the acceptance that there was a lot of unrest and disenchantment and disconnect with the fans and the team and the ownership.

Craig Conway's spot-kick made it 3-1, as Bees' Harlee Dean saw red but Forest and Birmingham wins sent Rovers down.

That was just another irritating quirk on a sorry day for Rovers, to be filed alongside the fact that Newcastle United were confirmed as champions: Rovers did the double over them this season.

"Ideally, we'll start this journey with it being as low as this club gets", Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray said, "and move forward".

Atletico coach Simeone bullish after Champions League defeat
Cristiano Ronaldo was the hero for Real Madrid last night but still had to plead with the fans for respect. It mattered little as Madrid made short work of Atletico's famously misery rearguard soon afterwards.

Things had looked extremely rosy for Rovers early on as it stormed into a 2-0 lead - Scottish global midfielder Charlie Mulgrew's goal, a delightful freekick, the pick of the two.

Forest's hero was Congolese striker Britt Assombalonga who set them on their way with a first-half penalty - shortly after a superb save by their keeper Jordan Smith kept the scores level - and added his second and the hosts' third with an excellent solo effort in the second half.

This Nottingham Forest fan commiserates with Blackburn Rovers fans, who have suffered at the hands of their owners.

Tony Mowbray's side were good value for the win as they showed far more desire and passion, harrying and chasing the Londoners throughout, but ultimately results earlier in the season had caught up with the Lancashire side.

Coyle left in February after losing just under half his matches in charge and was replaced by Mowbray with the club three points off safety with 15 games to play. The travelling contingent retorted with cries of "We're going to win 3-0".

"I looked at the fixtures and thought, 'Oh, they're not great fixtures!'" Redknapp told Sky Sports.
