Palestinians Call for Boycott After Pizza Hut Mocks Prison Hunger Strike Leader

More than 1,600 Palestinian prisoners have joined the protest action dubbed the Freedom and Dignity Strike since April 17, which was initially called by imprisoned and former Fatah movement leader Marwan Barghouti.

The protesters handed a memorandum to the UN Representative in Sudan, demanding the worldwide organization to intervene to improve the conditions of the Palestinian prisoners and force Israel to respect the global humanitarian law.

Israel released a video they say claim Barghouti secretly eating in his cell while leading Palestinian prisoners hunger strike in Israeli jails.

Some analysts in Israel have pointed to the hunger strike as a bid by Barghouti to show Abbas he still wields political power.

Palestinian supporters of the hunger strike have dismissed the video clips as a fabrication. He said that "the prisoners will not buy this account from the Israeli side, and they will continue their strike".

The initial post has since been removed from Pizza Hut Israel's Facebook page.

As a result, pro-Palestinian activists have previously called for a boycott of the chain. "It was completely inappropriate and does not reflect the values of our brand", she said.

On Monday, following questions about how the video came to light, Erdan suggested Israeli prison guards had tempted Barghouti with the food. "The local franchisee in the country removed it immediately and the relationship with the agency that posted it was terminated, and we truly regret any hurt this may have caused", it said.

An unidentified IPS official told Israel's Channel 2 Monday the videos of Barghouti were obtained as part of an IPS plan to tempt the strike leaders to eat by placing food in their cells.

Israeli authorities have detained approximately one million Palestinians since the establishment of the usurper regime of Israel in 1948 and the subsequent occupation of the West Bank, East al-Quds, and the Gaza Strip in 1967, according to a joint statement released on Saturday by Palestinian organizations.

He said the hunger strike had entered 23th day today, but worldwide community had taken no notice of it.
