Macron's election offers chance for more dynamism in EU: Merkel

France's newly-inaugurated President Emmanuel Macron named conservative Edouard Philippe as the country's new prime minister in an unusual move of choosing a head of government from outside the president's party.

The new prime minister, Edouard Philippe, comes from the centre-right Republicans, who are running against Emmanuel Macron's party in next month's parliamentary elections.

He worked as public affairs director for the state nuclear group Areva between 2007 and 2010.

Macron wants to win a parliamentary majority in June elections with the REM, which he hopes will redraw the political landscape, ending the grip on power of the traditional forces of left and right, the Socialists and Republicans.

Germany, which as Europe's strongest economy has borne the brunt of bailouts for weaker eurozone members, is not thrilled by this idea.

The announcement was made on Monday by Alexis Kohler, Macron's new general secretary at the presidential Elysee Palace.

Merkel has praised Macron's embrace of European unity but has offered few concrete details of the way forward for German-French relations.

What does she make of his appointment?

Soaking rain returns Friday with cooler temperatures
If this occurs, then localized flooding of poor-drainage areas and small streams may become an issue early Sunday . A dry start to our Friday morning will give way to a window of opportunity for some much-needed rain later today .

By appointing Mr Philippe, Mr Macron passed over some loyal followers including Richard Ferrand, a former Socialist who was one of the first to join Mr Macron's cause previous year and is secretary-general of REM.

Shortly after Philippe's appointment, Macron was scheduled to travel to Berlin on his first foreign trip as French leader.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and France's new President Emmanuel Macron vowed today to give a new impetus to Europe, saying they were ready to even change European Union treaties if necessary.

In Berlin, Macron declined to answer a question about his new prime minister, only saying the choice of Philippe is part of the new political landscape he's promoting.

Nicolas Bay, the party's secretary general, said Macron's government is becoming "a synthesis of the worst of the right and the worst of the left". He is a member of the Republicans, a mainstream-right party whose candidate Macron beat in the first round of the election.

Philippe, the mayor of the Normandy port of Le Havre, is a trained lawyer and an author of political thrillers. "Germany will only do well in the long-run if Europe does well", Merkel told a news conference after a meeting of her conservative Christian Democrats (CDU), victors in a regional German vote on Sunday.

Selecting Philippe as prime minister is seen as a way to bring in more support from the center-right, which Macron will need to push through his proposed economic reforms, according to the BBC.
