Intel prepares its new beast: the new Core i9 with 12 cores

AMD Unveils Expanding Set of High-Performance Products and Technologies Propelling Next Phase of Growth

The leak does suggest Intel plans to launch their new i9 chips next month, with the exception of the 12 core 7920X which is reportedly scheduled for an August launch.

The i9-7920X will come next with 16.5Mb of onboard L3 cache and supporting 44 PCIe lanes.

I put all of the scores into one of our benchmark templates, so you can see the scores in a much easier to understand way.

Core i7-7640K: 4 cores, 4 threads, 4GHz base, 4.2GHz Turbo, no Turbo Boost 3.0, 6MB of L3 cache, 16 lanes of PCIe 3.0. Skylake-X processors will be targeted at the high-end desktop PCs that need the extra power for simply the best performance. First, there's the amount of L3 cache. It's the reason my primary desktop is still rocking an Intel Core i7-4790K Devil's Canyon processor released several years ago.

The chip would feature a total of 13.75 MB cache, that's 1.375 MB per core. The Core i9-7800X is going to feature 6 cores, 12 threads and will carry a total of 8.25 MB of L3 cache.

Police warn: If you're hit by cyberattack, don't pay the ransom
Around a fifth of NHS trusts were hit in the attack, forcing them to postpone operations and procedures over the weekend. But UK hospitals, Chinese universities and global firms like Fedex also reported they had come under assault.

Sweepr, the Anandtech poster who leaked this information, claims that Intel has made up for the sharp L3 deficit by quadrupling the size of its L2 cache.

Intel might be planning a major change to their processor lineup.

The new lineup is set to rival AMD's upcoming Ryzen 9 "Threadripper" CPUs, which will feature similar specifications at potentially lower prices. Maybe Intel would take to the Computex event to do that. If you want to run two graphics cards at full x16, you have to buy a 10-core chip to do it.

If this leaked roadmap is true-and that's a big if-it implies Intel won't be fixing one of the artificial segmentation barriers that's most annoyed enthusiasts: the lockout on PCI Express lanes. Unless Intel plans to substantially slash prices, that would actually be a worse deal than at present. The company though is yet to acknowledge they have any ambitions beyond the Ryzen 7. None of the other processors leaked here list Turbo Max support, though it's possible the Core i9-7920X will, since no clockspeeds were provided. On the other hand, the Kaby Lake-X family will have two processors - Core i7-7740K and Core i7-7640K. AMD will also be launching its HEDT X399 processors with up to 16 cores really soon.

The average, relatively uninformed computer buyer (e.g., most computer buyers) will see that a system powered by a Core i7-7700K is a Core i7-based computer and that the Core i7-6900K-based machine also has a Core i7.
