Planned Parenthood, ACLU challenge new IN abortion law

Texas asks Feds to reinstate funding it lost when it snubbed Planned Parenthood

The abortion vendor's affiliates in Farmington, Rio Rancho, and Nob Hill in Albuquerque will close, reports local KOAT News. The organization pointed to a new state law that blocks federal family planning funds to abortion providers.

"14,676. That's the number of patients these four health centers have served over the last three years, the number of individuals receiving letters this week notifying them their provider of choice is closing", de Baca said.

Clinics in Burlington, Sioux City and Keokuk will close on June 30, 2017.

The locations served by those four Planned Parenthood clinics represent both sides of the state, and some of its most densely populated communities.

Planned Parenthood has placed the blame for the closures squarely on the shoulders of the Branstad-Reynolds administration and their approval last week of a health and human services budget eliminating funding for health care providers offering abortion services.

The state is asking the Trump administration for nearly half a billion dollars that it would have received half a decade ago if it had acknowledged Planned Parenthood.

Melissa McCarthy adds spice (and Spicer) as host of 'SNL'
Spicer is seen rolling through New York in search for Trump to the sound of Simon and Garfunkel's The Only Living Boy In New York. That was literally the joke for the entire sketch - no matter what Marcie did, she got hit with a pie.

But this legislation will have an even more profound effect on abortion and reproductive health care, one that goes far beyond Iowa's borders. The AHCA, Republican's draconian answer to the Affordable Care Act, would not only defund Planned Parenthood on a federal level (a national version of Iowa's bill) but would gut Medicaid and preexisting condition coverage, particularly for pregnant and low-income people.

"This is good news for families in the state of Iowa", Maggie DeWitte, director of Iowans for Life, said.

"If this law is allowed to go into effect, it will have a chilling effect on teenagers already dealing with a hard situation", said Betty Cockrum, president and CEO of the two-state Planned Parenthood organization.

The center does not perform in-clinic abortions, but does offer women a pill to terminate a pregnancy. "We are constantly looking at ways to remain effective, and over the years, we realized the need to transition". Most facilities are slated to be shut down June 30, though the Bettendorf center will be open for several more months amid staffing logistics. Chris Hall and Rep. Tim Kacena called the closing of the Sioux City clinic "troubling", saying it means almost 5,000 women in the area will "lose access to critical health care services like cancer screenings and birth control". He said in an email the governor's office was proud of the Legislature's move.

No public money is spent on abortions, but Republicans have said that giving any money to Planned Parenthood indirectly supports the procedure.
