Trump admin to extend protections for Haitians 6 months

The Trump administration is going to extend humanitarian protections for tens of thousands of Haitian immigrants who have been living in the United States since a deadly earthquake

Orrick cited Trump's reference to the order as a "weapon" as evidence that the administration meant to cut off a broad swath of federal funding, not just three U.S. Department of Justice and Homeland Security grants as government attorneys argued.

Currently, there are roughly 50,000 Haitians in the United States with "temporary protected status" and singer, Wyclef Jean is hoping to help them remain here.

"This six-month extension should allow Haitian TPS recipients living in the United States time to attain travel documents and make other necessary arrangements for their ultimate departure from the United States, and should also provide the Haitian government with the time it needs to prepare for the future repatriation of all current TPS recipients", Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said in a prepared statement".

In a press statement, Kelly added that the USA government officials plans to "work closely with the Haitian government" to help Haitians obtain the travel documents they need to move back.

More details regarding the TPS extension for Haiti will become available in a Federal Register notice later this week.

Haitians for Trump were among many urging Trump to deliver on his campaign promise last September as he courted Haitian immigrant voters at the Little Haiti Cultural Center in Miami.

"We've got to be nervous", she said.

"Haiti can't take 50,000 in right now", Jean said. The status itself is not permanent and can be revoked at any time that DHS determines conditions are safe enough for return. "Every day that goes by, people grow more and more anxious." she said.

"It would be very sad". If we're deporting people who aren't covered by TPS to a country, what justification can there be to let others stay?

She said Trump "made a commitment to Haiti and Haitians in the diaspora as well that he was really going to work with them, and for them, and he made a commitment". Her daughter, who was born in the USA, has special medial needs that she does not think would be adequately taken care of in Haiti.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement Monday on the matter.

The story has been updated with comment from a Haitian with temporary protected status.

San Diego saw a more recent influx of Haitians who left their country in 2010 to work in Brazil following the quake.

Microsoft chief: Cyber attack `wake-up call for governments´
One need not use an administrator account on their computer, you can just use a guest account with limited privileges. The patches won't do any good for machines that have already been hit. "Even without having an antivirus", they said.

DHS's announcement ignores the vast destruction last October of Hurricane Matthew, the worst to hit Haiti in 52 years which hit Haiti's bread basket; Haiti's unchecked cholera epidemic which has killed and sickened at least 9,500 and 800,000 respectively, and the current food insecurity crisis and spiked cholera cases due to Hurricane Matthew.

Former President Barack Obama allowed the TPS to protect Haitians in the USA after the 2010 natural disaster.

While DHS has pointed to indicators that conditions in Haiti have improved since 2010, including the closure of refugee camps in the island nation, advocates and legal service providers have refuted this position.

Kelly based his decision on several factors, according to a news release, including that there are fewer displaced people living in camps.

Haitian police lower the national flag in front of the badly damaged presidential palace in 2011.

"TPS as enacted in law is inherently temporary in nature, and beneficiaries should plan accordingly", Kelly said in the release.

The protection was set to expire July 22, and concerns in the Haitian community were growing.

One email contained instructions for department staff to research crimes committed by Haitians with temporary protected status. She said she is inviting Homeland Security officials to visit Haiti to view conditions.

Earlier this month, the Associated Press reported it had obtained internal emails from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services showing the agency sought information on criminal activity by Haitians temporarily in the United States.

U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Miami, had been fighting for an 18-month extension.

"I was in Haiti a few months ago", the congresswoman said.

A Flag from Haiti is pictured in a local store as a woman walks under rain at the neighborhood of Brooklyn in NY, U.S. May 13, 2017. Somalia, South Sudan and Syria are also eligible for the status. Kelly will have to decide by September whether to extend temporary status for Sudanese.
