Cabinet members head to Capitol Hill to defend Trump budget

Representative Sheila Jackson Lee a Texas Democrat says Trump’s infrastructure plan shows little

Job training for unemployed coal miners would be threatened and drug treatment programs would face cuts at a time when heroin and prescription pill addictions are tearing at rural America.

White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney slammed what he says is not mere fear-mongering but outright lies by Democrats about President Trump's federal budget proposal. In an op-ed published yesterday, he wrote that the budget represents a reversal from prioritizing the interests of the poor to "putting taxpayers first".

MULVANEY, head of the Office of Management and Budget: "I went back and looked at some of the economic assumptions that the Obama administration made in its first couple of years".

"These cuts that are being proposed are draconian". And I want to say on a couple of different occasions, their assumed growth rate was more than 4.5 percent.

The overall budget proposal is $76 billion, which the administration said is about the same as for 2016.

Wednesday's projections will serve as starting points for Senate Republicans writing their own health care bill.

US military personnel wait in line for Thanksgiving dinner at a coalition air base in Qayara south of Mosul, Iraq, Thursday, Nov. 24, 2016. The economy expanded instead at a sluggish pace, closer to 2 percent a year, leaving many voters who supported President Donald Trump feeling left behind.

On Tuesday, OMB Director Mick Mulvaney unveiled President Trump's latest budget proposal.

Cole oversees spending on health and social welfare programs as chairman of a House Appropriations panel and has a medical research facility important to his district that relies on federal funding. That slight decrease adds up to more than $600 billion over 10 years. "I think that is ill-advised personally", Cole told reporters.

According to U.S. Department of Agriculture figures, bedrock Republican states that Trump won have long food-stamp rolls: 3.8 million people in Texas, 682,077 in Vice President Mike Pence's home state of in, 815,000 in Alabama and 1.6 million in Georgia, for example.

"This budget starts by taking away health care, then food, then housing, then education, then job opportunities", Ms Jayapal said. In fact, they would impede economic growth.

The Trump budget is not without worthy ideas, including the creation of a federally funded family leave program, a new fund to quickly respond to disease epidemics, the expansion of school-choice programs (albeit at a smaller-than-expected scale) and a perhaps-too-modest infrastructure plan that includes both direct federal spending and incentives for public-private partnerships (but also cuts to Amtrak and other existing infrastructure programs). All three states voted overwhelmingly for Trump last November.

Liberal California would be hit hardest, with a 9.8 percent drop. But in states in the South, including North Carolina where lawmakers have been disgracefully harsh toward the poor, Medicaid benefits would be uncertain at best and dramatically diminished at worst.

-Farmers: The budget plan would cut farm subsidies by $38 billion over the next decade.

"We're not going to measure compassion by the amount of money that we spend, but by the number of people that we help", Mulvaney said.

The fiscal 2018 budget proposal, released by the White House on Tuesday, would cut the DOT's discretionary budget by almost 13 percent, to $16.2 billion.

The House bill would reduce taxes by around $1 trillion over the coming decade, the budget office said, largely on higher income people and health care industry firms. He said they are based on 3 percent economic growth that would come from lawmakers passing a new tax plan, as well as cuts that would come from repealing Obamacare - two major policy proposals that have a long way to go before they can reach the president's desk.
