BA says 'many' of its IT systems up and running

The computer crash affected BA's booking system‚ baggage handling‚ mobile phone apps and check-in desks‚ leaving passengers facing long queues and confusion in airports or delays while planes were held on runways.

Services resumed on Sunday but cancellations and delays delays persisted with about 200 BA flights in and out of Heathrow cancelled on Sunday, according to Guardian calculations.

A BA spokesperson added, "We are continuing to work hard to restore all of our IT systems".

There were more than 30 BA cancellations at Heathrow by 9am on Sunday and delays of around 30 minutes to their flights from Gatwick.

He apologised again for the "horrible time" and "very trying experiences" customers have been through.

British Airways says it has cancelled all flights from London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports on Saturday following a global IT system failure.

Both Gatwick and Heathrow advised passengers to check the status of their flights after terminals became congested with travellers hoping to get away for the long weekend and half-term school holiday. BA operated hundreds of flights from the airports daily.

Alex Cruz, the chairman and chief executive of BA, part of Europe's largest airline group IAG, said there was no evidence of any cyber attack and said a power supply issue was to blame.

Stranded holidaymakers spent the night on yoga mats on airport floors as disruption from the British Airways system failure continued into a second day with Northern Ireland flights hit by the chaos.

ABC News on Saturday observed thousands of passengers at one of British Airways' terminals at Heathrow Airport, with some saying they were never alerted that their flights were canceled.

BA Country Commercial Manager, Mr. Kola Olayinka was reported to have explained that Lagos flight expected to depart at 11.40pm Saturday was cancelled as the plane could not leave London because of the problem. He and other passengers arrived, but their luggage did not.

TV presenter George Clarke was stuck at Heathrow at the time and told the BBC that it was one of the "most turbulent, badly organised days, that I've ever experienced in Britain".

Customers displaced by flight cancellations will be able to claim up to £200 a day for a room (based on two people sharing), £50 for transport between the hotel and the airport and £25 a day per adult for meals and refreshments.

"'We helped her up and she said 'I'm just so tired,"' Page said.

BA passengers were hit with severe delays in July and September 2016 because of problems with the airline's online check-in systems.

British Airways has also said affected passengers can receive a full refund if they choose not to fly.
