Britain's Theresa May calls on British Airways to compensate customers for delays

From London to Paris, Singapore, New York, Lisbon and many other destinations, BA passengers were stranded as more than 1,000 flights were disrupted by the incident sparked at a London data centre near Heathrow on May 27, around 9:30am.

British Airways (BA) suffered a major IT failure last Saturday on its Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

While British Airways could face a one-off financial hit from the cancellations, the risk to its reputation among customers could have a more damaging longer-term effect.

The outage, which BA blamed on a "power supply issue", led to the cancellation of all its flights from both Heathrow and Gatwick on Saturday, with dozens more flights cancelled on Sunday.

BA said in its statement late on Monday evening: "We are extremely sorry for the frustration and inconvenience customers experienced over the Bank Holiday weekend and thank them for their patience and understanding".

BA chief executive Alex Cruz told the BBC that Saturday's IT failure, which caused mass cancelations, was due to a power surge and not because of technical staff being outsourced from the United Kingdom to India.

British Airways (BA) said May 30 it had fully recovered its schedules after the major weekend IT crash that grounded the airline's fleet across the world.

Cruz denied a suggestion from the local GMB union that the outage was linked to a decision to cut staff numbers and outsource work to India.

GOP health care bill analysis to be released by Congressional Budget Office
The Texas Senate approved SB 5 in March and on Tuesday the state House of Representatives preliminarily approved the measure. Bernal says he does not think lawmakers will be able to come to an agreement over changes to school finance this session.

Investors dumped shares in British Airways owner IAG, down 18p, or nearly 3%, at 596p, following the chaos at airports at the weekend with easyJet and Ryanair's stock also down.

The airline said it "may take some time" to reunite travellers with their bags.

The union spokesperson said it could have been avoided had "hundreds of dedicated and loyal" not been replaced by cheaper Indian staff in 2016.

The airline also admitted that it was aware some passengers were unable to file a delayed bag report on its website.

The British flag carrier has said the problem was caused by a power supply issue at one of its United Kingdom data centers.

British Airways added that their priority was to ensure that the failure could never happen again.

BA had already come under fire for charging extra for food and baggage and the sight of stranded passengers trying to sleep on the floor of its gleaming Heathrow Terminal 5 building is likely to tarnish its image. Several passengers complained about a lack of information from BA representatives at the airport.

Gil Hecht, the CEO of Israel-based IT outage prevention firm Continuity Software, said airline IT was "amazingly complex", but carriers would typically deploy layers of protection, with duplicates of every component and server.
