Goldman under fire for buying Venezuela "hunger bonds"

"What is happening there in Venezuela today, the people need to recognize - and in fact, I think it's quite clear now that they do - the common Venezuelan citizen recognizes that they are not alone", the official says, "that the hemisphere is in solidarity with them, that the hemisphere is supportive of their just calls for democracy".

Protesters gathered in front of Goldman Sachs Inc.'s headquarters in Manhattan to express their anger towards the purchase of Venezuelan government bonds, which will provide more money to the socialist government of Nicolas Maduro as the country continues to suffer a spiraling humanitarian crisis.

The bank last week paid about $865 million to purchase $2.8 billion in bonds issued in 2014 by Venezuela state oil company PDVSA-equivalent to about 31 cents on the dollar-but said it had no direct contact with the embattled government in Caracas.

In a scathing letter to Goldman CEO Lloyd Blankfein, Julio Borges called the deal an "outrage" that provides a "lifeline to [an] authoritarian regime that is systematically violating the human rights of Venezuelans". It has given oxygen to the Maduro regime. Other Venezuelan bonds also rallied, traders said. Detractors said Goldman is providing cash to and helping prop up a failed government that has been starving its people.

Tajani also characterized Venezuela's planned withdrawal from OAS as an act of "regional isolation that is harmful for the country". Protesters are demanding elections to kick out the government that they accuse of wrecking the economy and turning Venezuela into a dictatorship.

It's been more than 60 days since Venezuela's Supreme Court moved to dissolve the country's National Assembly.

But Venezuela could send a surprise representative to defend its position before foreign ministers - and to block any conclusive action against Maduro.

Nicaragua, a staunch ally of Venezuela, opposed the crisis meeting altogether, arguing Venezuela was the victim of a "political lynching".

Legislator Jose Olivares, who is a doctor, tweeted a picture of a bruise on Capriles' face that he said was the result of a soldier hitting him with a helmet during the clashes.

During the same march, opposition deputy Carlos Paparoni was knocked to the ground by a water cannon sprayed from a truck, requiring that he receive stitches in his head, Olivares said.

At least 22 member countries of the Organization of American States are expected to meet Wednesday in Washington to discuss the crisis in Venezuela.

The conference was organized by the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald news organizations as a forum of global business and government leaders. In his stead, he sent Tom Shannon, the USA undersecretary of state for political affairs, who urged Venezuela to stay in the group and defended its right to try to resolve the crisis.

In Venezuela, Maduro's critics have for two months staged street protests, which have left almost 60 people dead, to demand he hold early elections. The country is in a steep recession, with widespread shortages of food and medicine and skyrocketing inflation. Although Maduro said in March he asked the United Nations for help, he's had a history of refusing to accept foreign aid. "The government is becoming more and more repressive and the opposition is continuing its protests in the street", said political analyst Luis Salamanca.
