Japan, US Conduct Joint Naval Drill Off Korean Peninsula

On April 23-29, two MSDF destroyers, including an Aegis ship, conducted a joint exercise in the Sea of Japan with the Carl Vinson, which was on its way to waters near the Korean Peninsula.

The U.S. naval strike group, led by the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, will end its month-long mission near the Korean Peninsula on Wednesday night, the South Korean Navy said. The United States also could launch airstrikes at any time by unleashing about 150 F-16 jets stationed in South Korea and Misawa Air Base in Aomori Prefecture; F/A-18 strike fighters on its aircraft carriers; and strategic bombers based in Guam.

As with all statements coming out of North Korea, Thursday's statement is likely to have been approved by the country's 33-year-old "supreme leader", Kim Jong Un, the grandson of North Korea's founding ruler Kim Il Sung who died in 1994 at age 82.

Responding to the launch, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that Tokyo would take "specific action" and join forces with the U.S. to deter North Korea.

Meanwhile, North Korea has ignored all calls to halt its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, conducting dozens of missile launches and testing two nuclear bombs since the beginning of previous year, in defiance of United Nations sanctions. "I don't expect this to change North Korea's behavior". However, "Launching an intercontinental ballistic missile or conducting a sixth nuclear test" are red lines, according to a source well-informed about Japan-U.S. military matters.

Washington has described the exercise as "routine training". USA and Japanese leaders had agreed 26 May to increase tangible pressure on North Korea.

In a 2015 report, the U.S. -Korea Institute, a Washington D.C. think tank that focuses on the eastern Asia region, said that North Korea had the capability to produce up to 30 nuclear weapons.

The US military has also deployed the controversial THAAD missile system to a site in South Korea to counter what it calls threats from the North.

Japan and U.S. navy forces routinely train together to improve readiness and to provide stability and security for the Asia Pacific region.
