SEC tweaks graduate transfer rules, opening door for Zaire

The league chose to reduce the penalties for schools whose graduate transfers come up short in meeting certain academic requirements.

That would mean that Florida's penalty for the failures of graduate transfers Mason Halter and Anthony Harrell to make academic progress in the fall of 2015, originally set to extend into or through the 2018-19 academic year, is now over.

Until the amended rule, the SEC was the only Power Five conference with such a restriction on graduate transfers, thus putting it at a competitive disadvantage when it comes to bringing in those transfers. The Gators had been unable to add Zaire because two previous graduate transfers failed to meet academic requirements after transferring to Florida in 2016.

Florida head coach Jim McElwain, who stands to gain the most in the short term, was fairly indifferent about it when asked about it earlier in the week.

The star of the Blurred Lines video and Gone Girl wasn't the only one who made a statement with a barely-there appearance. The Victoria's Secret supermodel turned a lot of heads previous year when she arrived in that barely-there red dress.

Friday's vote reduced the ban from three years to one, a proposal by the athletic directors at SEC spring meetings in Destin, Fla.

If Zaire lands in Gainesville, he would compete for the starting job with redshirt freshmen Feleipe Franks and Kyle Trask as well as Luke Del Rio, who started six games last season.

Zaire hasn't made his final decision but reportedly was waiting to see what the SEC did before making his pick. Alabama coach Nick Saban was strongly opposed to the legislation. Sankey said he wasn't aware of any other conference that had a similar ban. "That's based on the knowledge that there's the opportunity for institutions to request waivers now under our current approach". I don't think it doesn't matter as much as that dynamic (being fair) as it is, constantly knowing that what you're trying to do is enhance each position group. Graduate transfers from one SEC school to another will still have to sit out a year unless the league grants the student-athlete a waiver.
