Trump vows to do everything to achieve Israel-Palestine peace

Trump's comments came before meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Bethlehem as part of a two-day visit to Israel meant to jump-start the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and unite the Middle East in the fight against terrorism.

Trump told Abbas he was "truly hopeful that America can help Israel and the Palestinians forge peace and bring new hope to the region and its people". What we saw in this visit is a feeling that "it behooves them to welcome [Trump] and to make him feel happy". Due to its location beyond the 1967 borders, presidents have avoided visiting the site for fear it would send a message to Palestinians that the United States recognized that the wall was part of Israeli sovereign territory.

Trump again vowed that he was "personally committed" to helping the two sides reach a deal to end the decades-old conflict.

"Trump's visit to the Western Wall clearly dismissed UNESCO's claims", Netanyahu said.

While Palestinian Authority officials seem willing to cooperate in Trump's effort to revitalize negotiations, much of Palestine's population is not on board.

Mr Abbas' Fatah party is at sharp odds with Islamist group Hamas, which is in power in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza, leaving no unified Palestinian position on peace.

The warming ties between Israel and US-aligned Arab regimes has come at the expense of solidarity with Palestinians.

During his first overseas trip as president, Trump has had harsh words for Iran, particularly when it comes to nuclear weapons.

"I make this promise to you, my administration will always stand with Israel", Trump told Israeli ministers at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem on Tuesday.

Trump, for his part, made sure not to mention the two-state solution and did not touch on any of the Palestinians' demands, including the issue of settlements, detainees or the right to self-determination. "President Trump welcomed the steps that Prime Minister Netanyahu's security cabinet have taken to improve the Palestinian economy, noting that greater economic opportunity for Palestinians would enhance the prospects for peace".

"It's clear that the tone (between the US and Israel) is going to continue to be much warmer, especially at the personal and the symbolic level that it was during Obama's eight years", he said. "He wants peace", he said. He has already visited Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Israel continues to seize Palestinian land for Jewish-only colonization and to violently suppress the Palestinian population with no consequences from the United States.

Trump was unclear what measures this confrontation would entail.

After Israel and the Palestinian territories, Mr Trump will head to the Vatican, and to Brussels and Italy for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and G-7 meetings.
