Report suggests Russia hackers breached voting software firm

The charges were announced less than an hour after The Intercept published a top-secret document from the U.S. National Security Agency that described Russian efforts to launch cyberattacks on at least one U.S. voting software supplier and send spear-phising emails to more than 100 local election officials days before the presidential election last November.

The NSA report said operatives from the GRU, Russia's military intelligence agency, apparently targeted employees at VR Systems, a Florida-based company that supplies election software and equipment for eight states, last August and again in late October.

A 25-year-old USA government contractor has been charged with mishandling classified information, after authorities say she gave a top-secret National Security Agency document to a news organisation.

The document, which contained information about Russian interference in the USA election, was published online by The Intercept barely an hour before Winner's arrest, NBC reported.

On August 24 of a year ago, Russian hackers sent emails created to look like they were from Google to employees of an unnamed US election software company.

A USA official confirmed to CNN that The Intercept's document is a genuine, classified NSA document. A USA intelligence officer who declined to be identified cautioned against drawing too big a conclusion from the document because a single analysis is not necessarily definitive.

"The actors likely used data obtained from that operation to ... launch a voter registration-themed spear-phishing campaign targeting U.S. local government organizations". It further states that the intelligence agency was subsequently contacted by the news outlet on May 30 regarding an upcoming story, saying it was in possession of what appeared to be a classified document.

Turkish FM lashes out at USA delivery of arms to Kurdish fighters
U.S. officials have also indicated they will boost intelligence cooperation with Turkey to support its fight against the PKK. However, the US believes the Kurdish elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) will be essential to Raqqa's downfall.

The U.S. intelligence community has concluded that Russian Federation conducted a broad influence campaign for the objective of undermining Hillary Clinton's candidacy and sowing doubts about the democratic process if she had won. The NSA didn't respond to requests for comment.

Winner's attorney, Titus Nichols, said she has no criminal history and is "a very good person".

The Intercept did not say how it came to possess the leaked NSA report. "All this craziness has happened all of a sudden".

In one, the Russian hackers posed as another voting company, referred to as USA company 2, from which they sent phony test emails - offering "election-related products and services".

A sworn affidavit from FBI Special Agent Justin Garrick only said that the document contained "defense information". When she was questioned, she admitted removing the intelligence and mailing it to the news outlet.

Asked if victor had confessed, Nichols said, "If there is a confession, the government has not shown it to me".
