Iran calls Trump's reaction to ISIS attacks 'repugnant'

Police increase patrols in Tehran after Iran attacks

"The terrorists first went by the vehicle to the mausoleum and after dropping two of them, went to the city center to attack the parliament", the police said in a statement published on state media.

Iran's intelligence ministry said on Thursday five of the detained suspects linked to the attacks in Tehran participated in Islamic State terrorist activity in Syria's Raqqa and Iraq's Mosul, state TV reported. The attacks targeted the Tehran parliament and the shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who founded the Islamic Republic in 1979. NPR's Michele Kelemen notes that the State Department condemned the attack and wrote that "the depravity of terrorism has no place in a peaceful, civilized world".

"Repugnant WH [White House] statement...as Iranians counter terror backed by US clients", Zarif tweeted.

Mr Trump said he prayed for the victims of Wednesday's twin attacks in the Iranian capital, which were claimed by Isis and killed at least 17 people.

They entered Iran a year ago under the command of Abu Aisha al-Kurdi, a ringleader of the ISIS terrorist group to carry out terror attacks in Iran's religious cities, according to the ministry.

Armed assailants apparently dressed as women attacked the parliament buildings in the morning equipped with assault rifles, handguns and suicide vests, killing security guards and ordinary people before taking hostages in the upper floors of the building.

Trump has repeatedly accused Iran of sponsoring "terrorism".

It described them as "long affiliated with the Wahhabi", an ultraconservative form of Sunni Islam practised in Saudi Arabia.

The embassy also pointed to the presidential election recently held in Iran in safe conditions with the participation of more than 73 percent of the population.

Two separate attacks shook Tehran on June 7.
