Trump Commits to NATO Mutual Defense After Hesitating

President Donald Trump

"Absolutely, I'd be committed to Article 5", he said Friday in response to a question from a journalist, speaking beside Romanian President Klaus Iohannis at the White House.

President Trump and Romanian President Iohannis at Rose Garden press conference, June 9, 2017.

Cable news networks offered stark headlines about the testimony of former FBI Director James B. Comey's two-plus hours of testimony to senators about his interactions with President Trump. White House aides said the president's support was implied even though he deliberately did not utter the words.

The Trump administration has also highlighted the fact Comey stopped short of accusing the president of obstructing justice - a potentially impeachable offense.

Answering questions during his press briefing today, President Trump was asked about NATO's Article 5 mutual-defense provision and offered his first public, direct confirmation that he is committed to military mutual defense of all other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member nations.

Under oath, the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director also told the Senate Intelligence Committee that the president had asked him during a one-one dinner at the White House to pledge loyalty. Asked if he would speak to the issue under oath, Trump said: "100 percent".

James Risch, R-Idaho. Whether Trump's behavior and comment amount to obstruction of justice, however, depends not on how Comey understood the comment, but Trump's intent in delivering it. Finding that out, as Comey noted, is now up to the special counsel, Robert Mueller.

Trump has vociferously denied suggestions that he and his subordinates coordinated with Russia, but he forced out his national security adviser, Michael Flynn, after reports that Flynn had misled administration officials over meetings he had with the Russian ambassador.

Karl: And you seem to be hinting that there are recordings of those conversations.
The House intelligence committee is seeking any tapes of the conversations. "He's a leaker", Trump said of Comey.

$3.8 billion Dakota Access oil pipeline begins service
But President Donald Trump , fulfilling campaign promises, quickly reversed Obama's decision after taking office. The Bakken Pipeline is a joint venture between Energy Transfer Partners , MarEn Bakken and Phillips 66.

But Comey's testimony about the President has darkened clouds hanging over the White House.

Sen. Susan Collins, a moderate Republican, said Congress needs to obtain any tapes the president might have of his dealings with the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

"I'd put it in the "better late than never" category", said Jeff Rathke, a retired career foreign service officer at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

TRUMP: I didn't say that.

"I'll tell you about that maybe sometime soon", he said. I didn't say that and I didn't say the other.

"Yes, I was on Judiciary Cmte that impeached Clinton/sent him for trial in the Senate for matters less serious than the ones before us now", Inglis tweeted Friday.

Trump concluded his team emerged "very happy" after Comey's testimony. "Comey described an episode during the inquiry into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server when then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch directed him 'not to call it an investigation but to call it a matter, which confused me and concerned me.' Comey said that language 'tracked" how the Clinton campaign was talking about the FBI's work.

"Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication", Trump wrote.
