Qatar's ties with Iran and Islamist groups

Gulf nations may let some Qataris stay amid diplomatic rift

Qatar is ready to listen to the concerns of Gulf Arab states that have cut diplomatic and economic ties, Kuwait said on Sunday, as it tried to mediate a solution to the worst regional crisis in years.

The agency said the fleet was dispatched as part of Iran's commitments to fight worldwide piracy, and did not mention tensions with Arab countries involved in the spat with Qatar. Qatari leaders are "willing to hold dialogue" to end the crisis, he said.

On Friday Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE and Egypt tightened their squeeze on Qatar by putting dozens of figures and charities they link to the country on terrorism blacklists. The six Arab governments accused Qatar of supporting terrorism, disturbing security and stability in the region, and supporting Iran. He added that the commission is working to hire an global law firm to handle cases related to Qatari and Gulf Cooperation Council citizens, who sought legal help after being affected by the blockade and embargo imposed on Qatar.

As well as cutting air, sea and land links with Qatar, the countries ordered its citizens to leave within 14 days.

Saudi Arabia said on Sunday it was ordering "suitable measures" to help families with mixed citizenships, but provided few details.

"Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Bahrain are toying with the lives of thousands of Gulf residents as part of their dispute with Qatar, splitting up families and destroying peoples' livelihoods and education", Amnesty International said on Friday. Other allies of Saudi Arabia followed suit and broke off diplomatic ties with Qatar including Mauritania, Maldives, and Niger, while Jordan downgraded its diplomatic representation in the tiny Gulf emirate.

Following the blockade, Iran, a main rival of Saudi Arabia, offered its support to Doha, urging Qatar and neighboring Gulf countries to engage in dialogue to resolve their dispute.

Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Hamad Al-Sabah said his country would not abandon mediation efforts until the impasse was resolved, the state-run KUNA news agency reported.

"Kuwait will not abandon efforts and will continue to seek to heal the rift and tackle the root causes of tension in the brotherly relations", al-Sabah said.

Eritrea declined a request by Saudi Arabia and the UAE to cut diplomatic ties with Qatar, according to a statement issued by Eritrean foreign ministry.
