'Wonder Woman' buries 'The Mummy' at box office

Those movies, however, were a lot more colorful than a soulless exercise like "The Mummy" - and offered less reason to start shuffling toward the exit. So don't think for a moment that the new monster movie's dollar shortage in North America is going to put the slightest dent in Cruise's career, but the jury is still out on whether or not we ever see this Dark Universe happen at the scale - and success - Universal wishes.

In The Mummy, Cruise is joined by a cast including Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, television's Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (TV's American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson) and Oscar victor Russell Crowe (Gladiator).

The acclaimed "Wonder Woman" followed up its record-breaking opening weekend last week by winning the United States box office for a second-straight weekend with an estimated $57 million, according to Exhibitor Relations, a dip of only 45% from last weekend.

Landing in second place with a thud was The Mummy with a weak $32.2 million from 4,065 theaters. Family film Cars 3 may knock Wonder Woman off the top spot next weekend, but it still has a couple more strong weeks left in it.

The action thriller, which was directed by Alex Kurtzman and also stars Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll, is created to kickstart Universal's new Dark Universe monster film series, but it got off to a slow start in the USA and Canada, earning a disappointing $32.2 million (£25.3 million) to enter the countdown in a distant second place. Cruise's film though is the first of Universal's attempt at expanding the Dark Universe, which features characters like The Mummy, Frankenstein and yes, even Dr. Jekyll. The movie fared far better overseas with a winning $141.8-M from 63 markets, Mr. Cruise's best worldwide opening. The global total is now $174 million, which is enough to account for the $125 million production budget. This project did not get the Dark Universe off to a strong start critically, though, with just a 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Executives at Universal have said the performance of "The Mummy" won't sway their plans for other films in development. But should there be any doubt, it's still full-steam ahead for the Dark Universe.

The next movie set to come out of the franchise is "Bride of Frankenstein", directed by "Beauty and the Beast" director Bill Condon (Kurtzman is a producer on the film). Following far behind was Universal Pictures' reboot of The Mummy franchise starring Tom Cruise.

"The array of titles available for us and the talent we have coming on board for the ones coming up, they all have to operate as an individual title", said Clark.

Look at films like Drag Me to Hell or The Ring or Insidious. We're looking forward to any number of the ones in the group.

Baywatch brought in $4.6 million in its third weekend, down 48% from last frame.

Alien: Covenant dropped 56% to $1.8 million in its fourth weekend, continuing to slide off the charts.
