"We are still desperately looking for these two individuals".

The sheriff of Oconee County, whose jurisdiction is north of where the killings occurred, wrote a post on Facebook to the escaped convicts.

This combo of undated photos provided by the Georgia Department of Corrections shows inmates Ricky Dubose, left, and Donnie Russell Rowe.

Authorities have confirmed inmates Ricky Dubose and Donnie Rowe took a white, 2008 Ford F-250 truck with a dent in the right rear quarter panel and silver tool boxes on both sides. Authorities in Georgia have released another photo of Dubose, showing prominent tattoos.

The deadly escape happened on Tuesday morning in the state of Georgia as the guards drove 33 inmates between prisons, and it set off a massive manhunt involving local, state and federal officers, Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said.

The sheriff was emotional as he recounted what he saw when he arrived on the scene.

Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Gregory Dozier said, "Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of two of our officers, who are our family, and our priority is to locate these fugitives and bring them to justice for this heinous act against those working to protect the public".

The Georgia Department of Corrections said it is is mourning two of its officers after two inmates shot and killed them Tuesday morning. "They're not concerned with anything regarding human life".

Armed with the officers'.40-caliber Glocks, Rowe and Dubose stopped the first passerby and stole that individual's auto, which is described as a 2004 grass-green Honda Civic with the license plate RBJ-6601.

Thirty-one other inmates were on the bus at the time of the incident, but Greg Dozier with the Georgia Department of Corrections said they stayed on the bus and have cooperated throughout the investigation.

"They ransacked the house pretty thoroughly", Sills said.

"They have known each other for quite a while", said Myrick. After forcing the driver out, the two drove west toward Eatonton, Sills said.

Rowe was serving life without parole and Dubose's conviction for armed robbery also made him ineligible for parole; he was to complete his 20-year sentence in September 2034. Since 2002, Rowe has been serving a life sentence without parole. "We are utilizing full resources of our local, state and national partners and appreciate their support, ' he said.Officials said Monica began his career with the Department of Corrections in October 2009 as a correctional officer at Hancock State Prison". It wasn't immediately clear why or for how long they were at the Hancock prison, or why they were being taken to the diagnostic prison.

Authorities in Putnam County, Ga., say a manhunt is underway for two prison inmates who are described as "dangerous beyond description".

"They need to surrender before we find 'em", Mr Sills said.
