An early US Open departure for Day and McIlroy

This might have been more than anyone was expecting. When you find yourself asking why, here's a brief explanation.

Matsuyama tied a second-round U.S. Open record in relation to par with his seven-under score, and his bogey-free 65 could have been even better.

Just not guys with a whole lot of name recognition.

Tonight marked the first time since the world rankings were created in 1986 that the top three ranked golfers on the planet missed the cut at a US Open though.

Henrik Stenson. Alex Noren.

Of the four, Fleetwood - who was ranked 188th in the world rankings as recently as last August, but now up to 32nd - is the only one never to have won in the United States. He set the target early under warm sunshine, and even as the wind tapered in the afternoon, no one could catch him.

Koepka raced out to nine under early in his second round, but dropped two shots on his back nine on his way to a 70.

The leaders are Paul Casey, Brooks Koepka, Brian Harman and Tommy Fleetwood. 7, 9 and 16, and bogeyed No. 5.

Day, who won the 2015 PGA Championship up the road at Whistling Straits, had to birdie his last hole Thursday to break 80.

Harman was the first left-handed victor of the Wells Fargo Championship and first left-hander to win on the PGA Tour since Greg Chalmers at the 2016 Barracuda Championship.

Danny Willett, the Masters champion in 2016, withdrew before the start of the second round with a back injury. But Paul Dunne (73 for 148), Graeme McDowell (73 for 149) and McIlroy (71 for 149) all missed out. He had five finishes in the top 10. His most recent top-10 was T7 at the Dean & Deluca Invitational.

The tournament-leading foursome held a one-shot lead over a trio of contenders that includes first-round leader Rickie Fowler.

Sessions calls allegations of collusion with Russian Federation appalling
Whether executive privilege is invoked "depends on the scope of the questions", White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters Monday.

Four years after Justin Rose ended a 43-year wait for an English victor, Paul Casey and Tommy Fleetwood headed into the third round of the US Open at Erin Hills in a four-way tie for the lead. And none of them was particularly close on a first-time major championship layout that has played soft. Unlikely as it seems, that was the last major he played on the weekend.

"You don't often see that in a U.S. Open", Hadwin said.

McIlroy entered the U.S. Open having not competed since last month's Players. Conditions were tougher, and it was a day when a round could get away from a player. The USGA is providing complimentary bottled water the rest of the week.

The health department says no one has reported becoming sick after drinking the water and E. coli bacteria have not been found at other hydration stations.

NOTEWORTHY: A 94-year-old man stopped breathing while in a grandstand on the sixth hole and died of what officials said appeared to be natural causes. "It's a big golf course with lots of rough, but it lets you play".

The one-under-par total was a substantial improvement on Thursday's six-over-par 78, but with the cut projected at one-over-par, it was too little, too late for the popular Northern Irishman. It didn't matter at that point because I was so far from the cut line, but at least I know it's in there, it's just a matter of getting it out of me and getting myself in the right frame of mind. A chip went sailing past the pin, leaving a long putt to save par which was duly missed. "I couldn't possibly shoot any higher than I did. Part of that is just age, and part I'll give credit to caddy Johnny McLaren, credit to my wife and my little boy".

The 26-year-old from Southport, who finished a shot ahead of Johnson to claim his second European Tour title in Abu Dhabi in January, said: "It's going to be great".

Fowler lost most of his ground over the final two hours.

Casey has recorded triple bogeys before in his long and illustrious 17-year pro career but none where he has fought back to share the lead in a Major. But I think at the end of the day it's competitive rounds with a card in my hand that I need and I've been very light on them this year. Not everyone can take advantage.

Casey sandwiched a pair of bogeys around his triple during a four-hole stretch of the back nine.

"If you look at the golf course and even talk to me, Jason or Rory, this course sets up ideal for us", Johnson said. "Yeah, it was a bit of a roller coaster". I feel like I'm playing good.
