EU, UK fix date to begin Brexit negotiations

Arriving for a meeting with his counterparts in the 28-country EU, Philip Hammond said his "clear view and I believe the view of the majority of people in Britain is that we should prioritize protecting jobs, protecting economic growth and protecting prosperity as we enter those negotiations and take them forward".

Following discussions in Brussels on Thursday, the offices of Brexit Secretary David Davis and the European Commission's chief negotiator Michel Barnier released a joint statement to confirm the date.

May gambled that a strong election win, as forecast by some pollsters, would boost her majority in the House of Commons in time for the Brexit talks, but instead, her party surrendered 13 seats in the lower chamber.

Earlier on Thursday, it was announced the uncertainty in Westminster had pushed back the Queen's Speech - when the monarch announces the Government's programme for the parliamentary session - from Monday to Wednesday next week.

The British government says that the talks to leave the European Union will start Monday, as planned. It does not wash.

Britain-EU Brexit talks to start Monday as planned
Barnier dismissed the suggestion of postponing the negotiations and said such a delay would only prompt further instability. May set out her plan for a hard Brexit in January, saying the United Kingdom "cannot possibly" stay in the single market.

The ITV presenter has been led to believe that the DUP is "100 per cent committed to the United Kingdom leaving the Single Market AND the Customs Union" - having preferred to use its bargaining power to press for plans to introduce means-testing for the winter fuel allowance and scrap the pensions triple lock to be dropped. The talks are taking place three months after Prime Minister Theresa May formally triggered the two-year Brexit timetable.

He wouldn't be drawn on whether he supported Britain's continued membership in the single market and said May's minority government will negotiate in a "pragmatic" manner, striving for a solution that works for both sides.

Brussels has warned that time is running out to start the talks with Britain on divorce terms and a future trade deal.

The first round of Brexit talks will begin two days before a meeting of European Union leaders in Brussels on 22 and 23 June. "We will continue with those negotiations throughout the weekend and into next week".
