"When he arrived, he was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death".

Scalise underwent his third surgery Thursday, which was anticipated when he first came into the hospital.

Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said this afternoon that Scalise had "sustained a single rifle wound that entered in the area of the left hip". He said doctors have turned down Scalise's sedation levels enough that the lawmaker has been able to respond to family members visiting him in the hospital. But he will remain in the hospital for "a considerable period of time" and faces additional operations.

Thursday morning, Minority Leader held back tears while she opened her press conference with prayers for the Whip saying, "our hearts are broken over the assault that was made really over all of us but personally over what happened over what happened to Steve Scalise".

"We all owe Steve a big, big thank you", Trump added. He was shot in the hip but the bullet tore through his pelvis and injured internal organs.

During the baseball practice on Wednesday, a gunman opened fire, injuring Scalise, congressional staffer Zach Barth, Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika and two members of the Capitol Police force, Crystal Griner and David Bailey.

Instead of wearing hats representing their home teams, as is the normal tradition, this year players on both teams wore Louisiana State University hats in honor of Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, for part of the game.
