Trump confirms he's under investigation, fires angry tweets

Rod Rosenstein

Donald Trump has appeared to confirm he is being investigated for obstruction of justice as he complained of a "witch hunt".

Deputy Attorney-General Rod Rosenstein submitted a widely circulated memo to the President in May 2017 raising concerns over Mr. Comey's performance, but Mr. Trump later asserted that he had already made the decision himself to fire Mr. Comey.

The transition team's general counsel issued the memo to members who helped set up the Trump administration between the election and inauguration, and it indicates how broad special counsel Robert Mueller's probe has grown, reported the New York Times.

Trump's spokesman said when he dismissed Comey on May 9 that the reason was the former FBI chief's handling of the investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server. But Trump later said in a television interview that he fired Comey at least in part because he was frustrated over the Russian Federation investigation Comey was leading.

In his memos, Comey said Trump had encouraged him to end an FBI investigation into Flynn, an effort that Comey called "very disturbing". The presumption, however, is that Mr. Comey's dismissal was due to official inquiries he was making about Trump's inner circle, namely, former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, and its ties with Russian Federation.

The new tweets are the latest in a week of angry social media responses from the president over a report by the Washington Post that Mr Mueller was looking into whether Mr Trump obstructed justice.

The Republican president has repeatedly complained about the probe, calling it a witch hunt and saying Democrats can not accept his election victory.

The Democratic National Committee called on Rosenstein to recuse himself from the Russian Federation matter, but it said authority over the investigation should be given to Mueller and not another Trump appointee.

US President Donald Trump has mocked FBI investigators of not being able to find any evidence related to the probe of a possible collusion between his team and Russian Federation during 2016 Presidential election.

Citing unnamed sources, ABC reported Rosenstein told Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand she would have authority over the probe if he were to step aside.

Rosenstein is in charge of hiring and firing because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation probe.

But, after the news came out, there was speculation that Trump could be planning to fire Mueller from his post as special counsel.

"The message the president is sending through his tweets is that he believes the rule of law doesn't apply to him and that anyone who thinks otherwise will be fired", she said in a statement released Friday.

Moscow has denied any interference. They have tried to highlight the positive reviews he received Wednesday when he made a statesman-like appearance in the White House to address the nation after Rep. Steve Scalise was shot during a congressional baseball practice.

This was confirmed by the president himself in a series of tweets on Friday morning. "Sad!" he wrote in one post.

Donald Trump's transition team has been asked to retain records related to five former campaign associates, including former chairman Paul Manafort. But Rosenstein, too, may ultimately have to hand off oversight of the probe given his own role in Comey's firing.
