Mueller investigating Trump for obstruction of justice, Washington Post reports

Robert Mueller was appointed by the Justice Department as special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections

Can President Donald Trump dismiss special counsel Robert Mueller, who is appointed to lead the FBI investigation into Russia's potential ties to the 2016 election?

PBS's Judy Woodruff reported Monday that Trump friend Chris Ruddy told her after visiting the White House that Trump is "considering perhaps terminating" Mueller - a decision that would set off a massive political backlash.

After President Donald Trump's friend, Chris Ruddy, said Monday night that Trump is considering firing Mueller, Rosenstein said in a Senate appropriations subcommittee hearing that Mueller can "only be fired for good cause", and it would be his job to put that good cause into writing. In that testimony, Comey said that he believed - because Trump had said so - that he was sacked due to the FBI's investigation of the possible Trump connections to Russian Federation. "He comes from a law firm that represents members of the Trump family", Ruddy said.

Adam Schiff, who is the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, was quick to respond to the report.

"I personally think it would be a very significant mistake, even though I don't think there's a justification", he added.

In the PBS interview, Ruddy said Trump had considered replacing former FBI Director James Comey with Mueller, who also was a former FBI director during the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich spoke critically of special counsel Robert Mueller and his team, calling special counsels "very unsafe".

"Mr. Ruddy never spoke to the President regarding this issue", Press Secretary Sean Spicer said.

Trump confirms he's under investigation, fires angry tweets
Deputy Attorney-General Rod Rosenstein submitted a widely circulated memo to the President in May 2017 raising concerns over Mr. Donald Trump has appeared to confirm he is being investigated for obstruction of justice as he complained of a "witch hunt".

A spokesman for Mueller's team declined to comment on Wednesday.

Mueller was appointed Federal Bureau of Investigation director by President George W. Bush in 2001 and served until 2013, when Comey took over as head.

On Twitter, Newt Gingrich, an informal adviser to Trump, called the appointment of a special counsel "nonsense", suggesting it's "delusional" to believe Mueller would be fair, less than a month after praising the appointment as "a superb choice".

But Ruddy outlined what seems to be growing talk from Trump circles raising concerns about Mueller.

And a person familiar with Trump's thinking said Tuesday morning that it's "unlikely" the President will fire Mueller, but conceded that it's often hard to predict Trump's behavior.

Mueller has served multiple presidents in both parties.

"What they have said is, and what I've heard from everybody is, the president didn't speak to him on this matter and he doesn't speak for the president".
