John Oliver says Donald Trump 'needs to stop lying to coal miners'

John Oliver sees a coal company's cease-and-desist letter and raises them these nuts

But there's a problem: He's got friends in high places in the world of coal. But his administration's claims to have fulfilled that pledge with "50,000 new coal jobs", ironically articulated by EPA administrator Scott Pruitt, are simply lies. "It is not easy watching someone I doubt has done a day of hard labor in his life, show how he thinks coal mining works".

A deep look into the reality of the coal industry was the main story for Last Week Tonight, and it's one that John Oliver handles with nuance and full acknowledgement of how coal is central to many communities. Using a mix of statistics and old Trump quotes, Oliver implored the president to "stop lying" to America's miners. Oliver pointed out that when coal jobs go away in mining towns it's felt by the entire town, which Trump has been able to appeal to. Coal jobs aren't in decline because of the regulations the industry likes to blame, but due to market forces such as cheap natural gas.

Oliver then went on to call out Environmental Protection Agency head Scott Pruit, who bragged on NBC's "Meet The Press" that the administration was responsible for adding "almost 50,000 jobs in the coal sector" since "the fourth quarter of a year ago".

"Oliver played a 1990 interview Trump did with Playboy, in which he revealed "how he really feels" about the coal industry", the site said.

Trump lashes out at 'bad,' 'conflicted' Russia investigators
Trump wrote on Twitter , in a pair of messages that ended with a reference to his campaign slogan "Make America Great Again". Still, the snowballing investigation has deeply angered Trump, who denies he has any nefarious ties to Russian Federation .

The Trump administration has spouted inaccurate statistics about their support of coal miners.

The comedian just wants to see Trump start telling to the truth to miners because it's likely the jbos they once had will not be returning. "So as we have been told to cease and desist, let us do neither of those things, and let's talk about Bob Murray".

Kicking off the Murray Energy portion of his coal report by saying "I'm going to need to be careful here", Oliver, unsurprisingly, launched into a decidedly incautious (if undoubtedly heavily vetted by HBO legal) examination of how the camera-loving Murray's track record revels in a suspiciously Trump-esque (aka bullshit) assertion that what's good for coal company CEOs is good for coal company employees.

Still, it's Last Week Tonight so Oliver ends by taunting Murray Energy's founding myth which features a conversation with a squirrel.
