Sex assault investigated in Muslim teen slaying

Egypt's Al-Azhar denounced on Tuesday the murder of an American Muslim girl of Egyptian descent in a suspected hate crime in the U.S. state of Virginia. Police say Nabra was assaulted and abducted near the intersection of Dranesville Road and Woodson Drive, which is just east of the Fairfax/Loudoun county line. Fairfax Police said Martinez Torres chased the youngsters with a baseball bat, and catching up with Hassanen and beating her after her friends had scattered. They say Torres became enraged with the group of teens and exited his vehicle wielding a baseball bat, striking Nabra.

Authorities say they believe that Nabra was assaulted twice before she died, once in Loudoun County, Va., and once in Fairfax County, Va. Officers confirmed that they were investigating whether the teen was sexually assaulted during one of the attacks. Martinez Torres is being charged with murder. As they were returning to the mosque, some were on the sidewalk and others were on the road itself.

He acknowledged that the slaying has people grieving and fearful, but he praised the many people who turned out "in a fever" to search for the teen before police discovered her body Sunday afternoon.

Police say Soloman had been setting fire to numerous items from the park, and did not appear to be intentionally targeting items from Nabra's memorial. Torres has been charged with murder in connection to the case.

A hate crime in Virginia can bring up to five years behind bars if it results in injury. "And it wasn't just Muslim youth" but the broader Reston community that she was connected to, he said. "An angel was taken".

She is now gone, and in the midst of that raw, visceral absence, Mohmoud said he does not want other families to experience the pain he is going through.

Those who knew said they'll remember her bright smile.

The case continued to strike a chord well beyond Virginia on Tuesday.

Dozens Hurt After China Eastern flight Hits Turbulence Between Paris-Kunming
China Eastern Airlines later said it was crucial passengers wear seatbelts as flights descend. China Eastern didn't specify when or where the turbulence took place.

He said that he was not sure what to make of the Dupont Circle memorial fire, but added "the community is already on edge because of the tragic and brutal murder of our sister".

Some sources report Nabra's father, Mahmoud Hassanen, said he thinks his daughter was attacked for being Muslim.

Rania Salem, 21, of Arlington was one of the first to arrive.

Lamia Sarver of McLean said the tragedy hits home because she has a daughter Nabra's age.

"It could have been any of us - we all go to the mosque during Ramadan for prayer. I'm not safe right now, you know, we feel", she said. As of the morning of Tuesday, June 20, the campaigns raised a total of $327,305 from more than 12,000 contributors nationwide.

Police believe Hassanen was a victim of road rage, not a hate crime, but Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney Raymond Morrogh said prosecutors have not ruled out any motive. "We trust her, she's a good daughter, but we can not trust people outside - never", Ngaliman said.

The fact that she was murdered in such a ruthless and heinous manner is sickening on its own, but for someone to be heartless enough to destroy her memorial is downright abhorrent. He allegedly grabbed Hassanen and hit her with a baseball bat, the police said in a statement posted online. Police are investigating her death as a road rage incident, claiming Torres became enraged after the teens and her friends were riding bicycles and walking in the street. But most differ on what acts qualify, and some leave it to judges to decide whether to impose stiffer penalties at the time of sentencing.
