'The Mummy' Reboot Teases More Monster Films With Easter Eggs

However, with its blend of action, spooks and laughs, some nicely filmed sequences and a decent effort by Cruise, this latest "Mummy" is, like numerous other recent big-budget, more worth seeing than not.

Cruise has been monster man his whole life and has big plans for Universal's big stable of classic monsters.

On its own, The Mummy is a solid but unspectacular action movie that delivers some thrills and spills that aren't good enough to leave an impression. A new musical theme for the "Dark Universe", composed by Danny Elfman, will debut in theaters ahead of "The Mummy". We would have the most epic laughter sessions between the two of us and it was that natural rapport inspired the comedic element to the movie that wasn't written in. Or something else entirely? This time, however, Tom Cruise anchors "The Mummy" with a big budget but a conspicuously hollow script.

Cruise's Nick is a long-range recon man for the Army who, along with partner Chris Vail (Jake Johnson of "Jurassic World"), has a habit of getting sidetracked on missions.

And never mind that no one is exactly clamoring for the big screen return of "The Mummy" - the movie gods (er, Universal Studios execs) have decreed it is time for another "Mummy" movie and summertime deems that a big blockbuster must open every week.

Things get even more interesting when Nick meets professional monster chaser Dr. Henry Jekyll (Russell Crowe), who has a very intimate knowledge of uncontrollable evil. Those expecting an all-out action adventure like the 1999 version of "The Mummy" starring Brendan Fraser may a bit let down. The brief appearance of Dr. Jekyll (Russell Crowe) will make you eagerly anticipate the next Dark Universe movie to hit cinemas.

Rep. Steve Scalise's condition upgraded to 'serious'
Scalise is a member of the team and had been fielding balls at second base in preparation for the game when he was shot. Scalise underwent his third surgery Thursday, which was anticipated when he first came into the hospital.

Flash forward to the present day, with Cruise as Nick Morton, a soldier and, as he puts it, "liberator of precious antiquities" who - while fortune-seeking in Iraq - inadvertently awakens Ahmanet, who winds up wreaking havoc in, around and finally under London.

It's not a strong start to the Dark Universe franchise.

- Are we really not sick of Tom Cruise yet?

Yes, I know what you're thinking.

All in all, The Mummy was a satisfactory introduction for horror fans to enter a new world of cinematic monsters.

Cruise and Wallis bring their charm in this what is supposed to be a common monster fighting, making "The Mummy" a zombie-raising action adventure film similar to what Fraser and Weisz did. Worst of all, Boutella, who gave a mesmerizing breakout performance in last year's Star Trek Beyond, makes nearly no impression as Ahmanet, who spends much of the movie held captive, even though she's meant to be the main antagonist.
