Sears closing stores in Mentor, Middleburg Heights

As Sears Canada enters a court-supervised restructuring the company's pop-up shop in downtown Toronto is trying to entice new shoppers with a hipper image

Sears stores have struggled with a consumer shift toward online shopping, tough competition from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target Corp., and what analysts have decried as a cycle of underinvestment in stores, which many shoppers see as exhausted or lacking inventory, Crain's reported.

A company spokesman told ABC27 News the store at 1094 Haines Road will begin its liquidation sale on June 29 and close to the public in mid-September.

Sears Holdings, which owns both the Seas and Kmart chains, is struggling and has announced the closing of 200 locations in order to improve its cash flow.

The Illinois-based company shut down a Grand Rapids store in March after a January announcement of nationwide closures. An auto center at the Galewood Sears will close in late July. Kmart stores in Clementon, East Brunswick, Manahawkin, Mantua, Pleasantville and Rio Grande closed this year.

John Oliver says Donald Trump 'needs to stop lying to coal miners'
Using a mix of statistics and old Trump quotes, Oliver implored the president to " stop lying " to America's miners. The Trump administration has spouted inaccurate statistics about their support of coal miners.

Sears Canada received court protection from creditors on Thursday and announced a plan to close 59 locations and cut 2,900 jobs.

Sears acknowledged in March that there was "substantial doubt" it would survive on its own, though the company said its cost-cutting maneuvers and other retail strategies would greatly improve its chances of carrying on.

Riefs said in his email the number of affected employees is not publicly available.

When TravelBrands filed for creditor protection in 2015, the Amended Sears Agreement - along with dwindling margins and lease obligations including $3.6 million in yearly rent on a vacant building, a holdover from the Thomas Cook Canada deal - was blamed as one of the factors dragging the company down.
