Group gathers for Amateur Radio Field Day

Fun and games – but braced for catastrophe – with HAM radio operators in Pointe-Claire

On the weekend of June 24-25, the public will have a chance to meet and talk with Whitley County ham radio operators and see for themselves what the Amateur Radio Service is about as hams across the US will be holding public demonstrations of emergency communications abilities.

They set up temporary antennas and make as many contacts with other radio operators across North America, keeping them sharp in the event of conventional communications failing.

Howard Thompson, with the Germantown Fire Department explained.

"(The event) is a way for amateur radio operators to dial in their skills as far as (participating in) an emergency set up station", said Field Day chair Chris Sheridan. "We've seen it go down on several occasions, and the radio operators can perform their duties without any of the modern conveniences around".

George and Amal Clooney welcome twins Ella and Alexander
Next to it, she hilariously wrote, "hey congrats george on our new additions to the family love your OG babykid". GEORGE Clooney's dad has broken his silence after the Hollywood star's wife Amal gave birth to twins.

Chris Edwards attempts to find other Field Day participants on his ham radio during the W6JW Santa Clarita Radio Club Field Day at the Castaic Lake Water Agency on Saturday.

That's the succinct message of local and area Ham Radio operators. For Field day that information consists of the operators the state and section within that state. "We're only missing a few section in Canada and they're not the heavily populated ones", said Hawk.

The practice is a hobby that could be used should other means of communication be impacted during a disaster.

There are about 25 members in the Lawrence County club. "It's also a way to get the public out to show them what HAM radio is about and how some of these things work". There are now over 700,000 Amateur Radio licensees in the United States, and more than 2.5 million around the world. They can even help you get on the air!
