Shooting at UPS centre in San Francisco leaves 4 injured

Ambulances at the UPS building

A gunman in a UPS uniform killed three people and left two others injured before attempting to commit a suicide as police arrived at a company facility in San Francisco early Wednesday, authorities said.

"It's insane." Police responding to the facility in the Potrero Hill neighborhood, about 2 miles from downtown San Francisco, found wounded victims and pulled them to safety.

Police said the suspect was armed with an assault pistol and shot himself after being confronted by responding officers.

The UPS employee who opened fire in a San Francisco package delivery facility killing three was identified as 38-year-old Jimmy Lam, authorities said late Wednesday.

A New York City police spokesman said in a statement on Twitter that one person was shot in the leg and was in stable condition.

The man opened fire while the workers were gathered for their daily morning meeting before they were due to head out on their delivery routes, UPS spokesman Steve Gaut told The Associated Press.

Some of those shot were taken to San Francisco General Hospital.

Two others were injured in the attack.

Germany came to the Confederation Cup with a young squad that has only three players from its World Cup-winning team. Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, however, will be sidelined again because of a left calf injury.

May Vang, who works across the street from the facility, said that by 10 a.m. police and UPS workers were standing around outside.

"Violence is never the answer, but the continuing scourge of gun violence is particularly disheartening", she said.

Gaut said, "The company is saddened and deeply concerned about affected employees, family members and the community we share". The UPS facility is located near 17th Street and San Bruno Avenue, ABC San Francisco station KGO-TV reported.

In addition to the shooting victims, Chaplin said five others suffered various injuries, a lot of them occurring during the rush to escape.

Neighbors said they heard up to eight rapid gunshots.

Aerial footage showed police leading dozens of people, many in matching brown work uniforms, out of a building. The shooter and all the victims were employees, UPS said in a statement.

The site of the shooting was in the Potrero Hill area, a largely residential neighborhood.
