Trump on hold for "at least 90 seconds" before talking to Varadkar

Trump, Varadkar in first phone greeting

US President Donald Trump today congratulated Ireland's new Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, who earlier this month became the country's youngest ever and first openly gay leader.

Trump said: "We have so many people from Ireland in this country".

But he has been criticized by opposition parties for his more conservative views on economic issues.

The Taoiseach also spoke to UK Prime Minister Theresa May this evening to discuss the ongoing talks aimed at restoring the power-sharing Executive in Northern Ireland.

This is published unedited from the PTI feed.

Mr Varadkar's predecessor Enda Kenny invited Mr Trump to Ireland last March.

Maryland, DC attorneys general file lawsuit against Trump
The clause stops him from accepting any sort of gifts from foreign governments without getting approval from the congress. The lawsuit, which has been shared on The Washington Post , describes "unprecedented" violations of the Constitution.

Other topics discussed included migration, Brexit, climate change, free trade, Irish inward investment in the U.S., and the undocumented Irish.

Trump congratulated Varadkar on his "great victory" and said he feels like he knows all the Irish people in America.

The President allowed members of the media to witness the first part of the call and photographs from the Oval Office show the US President seated behind the Resolute Desk while speaking to Mr Varadkar.

They also discussed the North's peace process. However, he said no progress had been made in organising the visit and there was no timeline in place.

"I will not, of course, rescind that invitation". As of yet, however, there has been no transatlantic discussion on such a presidential visit and there was no talk about such a visit during Tuesday's phone exchange.
