Microsoft Releases Patches for Unsupported Software

Microsoft includes Windows XP and Vista in June's Patch Tuesday updates

Security and patch experts contend that Windows XP is still retired, still obsolete, still dead, even though Microsoft has arguably muddied the waters by issuing security updates two months running for the 16-year-old operating system.

Last month, Microsoft was forced to patch Windows XP to help prevent the spread of WannaCry ransomware, which hit 75,000 PCs worldwide and struck NHS hospitals across the UK.

"Microsoft is announcing the availability of additional guidance for critical security updates, that are at heightened risk of exploitation due to past and threatened nation-state attacks and disclosures", it said in an advisory.

Microsoft also made the security update to older versions of Windows via manual download and installation, including Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.

Microsoft's latest patch comes with a stern warning but failed to reveal the source that led the software titan to believe how government organisations could leverage new vulnerabilities to attack Windows computers. ZDNet confirmed today that Microsoft patched these three flaws in the eight XP and Server 2003 security updates it released as part of the June 2017 Patch Tuesday. Users of Windows 10 or Windows 8.1 that have Windows Update turned on, such as consumers, don't need to take further actions to be protected, according to the announcement.

The new security fixes are created to address three different vulnerabilities that were not patched before. Microsoft has also provided a patch for this issue for older [end-of-life] platforms.

Group gathers for Amateur Radio Field Day
There are now over 700,000 Amateur Radio licensees in the United States , and more than 2.5 million around the world. The practice is a hobby that could be used should other means of communication be impacted during a disaster.

Microsoft does caution that just because it has released these security patches for the outdated versions of Windows, it doesn't mean that it's actively supporting those iterations yet again. One of those came one day after last month's outbreak of the highly virulent "WCry" ransom worm, which repurposed NSA-developed exploits.

"I don't think that in the coming months we'll see more Windows XP patches". Meanwhile, the company typically boasts that the newer version of Windows is better, faster, and most important, more secure, and like a rusty tool, has worn out its usefulness. "Every time an organisation resists upgrading to Microsoft's latest operating system, it jeopardises its own security".

"Our decision today to release these security updates for platforms not in extended support should not be viewed as a departure from our standard servicing policies", Doerr stated.

Those patches are automatically being installed on more recent versions of Windows, provided that users didn't disable automatic updates.

The updates are available in the Microsoft Download Center and the Update Catalog Page.
