Samsung Opening $380M Manufacturing Plant In South Carolina

Samsung to open $380 million appliance manufacturing plant in Newberry County

Yoon Boo-keun, president of consumer electronics at Samsung Electronics, signed an investment letter of intent with Henry McMaster, Governor of SC, for the establishment of a washing machine plant in the U.S. State on June 28. The investment amounts to US$380 million (around 440 billion won), with around 950 jobs to be created.

The high-tech plant will employ engineers and a variety of technical and non-technical workers, the company said.

The investment announcement comes less than a month after USA appliance rival Whirlpool Corp asked a government trade panel for stronger protections against imported washing machines made by Samsung and LG Electronics, arguing that the South Korean firms have skirted Commerce Department anti-dumping orders for years by shifting production to various countries.

Samsung and LG washers made outside the country are now under safeguard investigation by the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) upon compliant by U.S. washer maker Whirlpool that had lost its top position in the U.S. washing machine market to Samsung Electronics.

In March Patently Apple reported that three Southern U.S. States were battling it out for Samsung's new $300 million dollar appliance plant. Standing are, from left to right, US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Senator Lindsey Graham, Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Lee In-ho and Samsung Electronics US President Tim Baxter.

The company said it chose Newberry because the area boasts excellent human resources along with sound transportation infrastructure. Samsung already operates a call center in Greenville that supports 800 full time and contracted jobs.

The 30-year-old Monaco player made his 100th worldwide appearance with Portugal in the team's win over New Zealand on Saturday. Raphael Guerreiro is also still recovering from a left ankle blow he suffered in the 1-0 win over Russian Federation .

The state's Coordinating Council for Economic Development also has approved job development credits for the project.

Governor Henry McMaster believes this project will change the very fabric of the rural community.

The chamber said that the investment will go into building factories, expanding production facilities, research and development on developing future technologies as well as mergers and acquisitions. Jim Newsome, president and CEO of the State Ports Authority, called the manufacturer's decision "very significant to the port", adding it "reflects our ability to meet the global supply chain needs of major worldwide manufacturers".

An event was held Wednesday in Newberry to celebrate the announcement.

The company, which is based in South Korea, reportedly made the decision following the election of President Donald Trump, after "worries about protectionist policies" allegedly "put pressure on global companies to generate jobs in the country". Samsung accounted for 18.7 percent washer sales in the U.S.in 2016.
