Takata air bag blamed for death during fix job

Instead, it was someone trying to make repairs with a hammer.

Honda says a man died in June 2016 when an inflator ruptured while he was working inside a 2001 Honda Accord using a hammer.

Honda said the car's ignition switch was on, so the air bag would have been ready. Honda says "Twelve mailed recall notices were sent over the course of almost seven years to registered owners of this vehicle prior to the June 2016 incident". When it did deploy, the faulty propellant ruptured the inflator and, according to The Associated Press, "shot out fragments". "That's why government regulators need to step up the pace of figuring out whether all remaining Takata airbag inflators are safe". "While the absolute cause of death may never be fully determined, Honda now considers this to be the 11th confirmed fatality in its vehicles related to Takata airbag inflator ruptures in the U.S". The company would not release the man's name. The spokesman noted that there is a deceleration sensor that activates the air bags mounted on the wall between the engine and passenger compartment. The twist this time, however, is that the incident didn't occur during a crash, but while the vehicle was in a shop being repaired.

Honda Motor Company in the US has confirmed another death related to a faulty Takata airbag, but on this occasion the deceased was performing repairs on the 2001 Accord instead of driving it.

Records did indicate that the Honda in question hadn't received service for the inflator recall, despite numerous notifications.

The airbags on the following Hondas models have up to a 50% chance of exploding in a crash: 2001 and 2002 Accord and Civic, the 2002 CR-V and Odyssey, the 2002 and 2003 Acura 3.2 TL, the 2003 Acura 3.2 CL and the 2003 Pilot.

Maryland Officials Deny Trump Panel's Voter Data Request
A spokesperson for Arizona Secretary of State Michele Reagan told KTAR in an email she has not received the commission's letter. Trump lost the popular vote in last year's presidential election by about 2.9 million votes.

The recall, which comes in addition to the 42 million inflators Takata previously recalled, covers airbag inflators made from 2005 to 2012 and used in certain Nissan, Mazda, and Ford vehicles.

It's the 12th US death attributed to the faulty inflators and 17th worldwide, including five in Malaysia. More than 180 injuries have been linked to the problem in the U.S.

Honda stressed Monday that it has enough replacement inflators to fix every Honda and Acura with a recalled Takata airbag (particularly the Alphas) - for free.

US-based Key Safety Systems (KSS) will take over Takata's global assets and operations in the coming months for the sum of $US1.6 billion ($A2.1 billion).
