Trump Budget Would Cut Deficit But Wouldn't Balance, CBO Says

White House analysis of health bill seeks to discredit CBO

This isn't the first time that the nonpartisan CBO has issued pronouncements that contradicted claims of the White House and the Republican-controlled Congress. Trump advisers and some GOP congressional leaders were outraged by CBO's recent analyses of House and Senate GOP proposals to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act that predicted that as many as 23 million Americans would lose their coverage in the coming years and that health care premiums would rise even more before finally plateauing. That's 11 points below the current projections, but far from the promises touted by the White House.

By contrast, CBO's analysis of Trump's budget plan shows the deficit steadily rising from $593 billion in fiscal 2018 to $720 billion in fiscal 2027.

Trump's May budget submission proposed jarring, politically unrealistic cuts to the social safety net for the poor and a swath of other domestic programs.

The White House is likely to take the CBO projection of Trump's budget proposal with a grain of salt.

The CBO said it also didn't have enough information about numerous president's economic policy proposals to calculate their effects on the budget.

The CBO also said the White House proposal for tax overhaul "lacked the specificity necessary to evaluate any (economic) effects from such a change".

Tropical Depression #4 spins over the Atlantic
Tropical Depression Four was classified, roughly 1,500 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, Wednesday night at 11 p.m. He also helped develop new Global Positioning System dropsondes that showed how eyewall winds vary.

The CBO said did not take into account all of Trump's proposals that may affect the economy because "the details on numerous proposed policies are not available at this time".

Deficit reductions would be a result of drastic spending cuts proposed under the Trump plan.

On Thursday, the White House's Office of Management and Budget found parts of the budget office's work worthy of praise. "The Congressional Budget Office's numbers don't add up", it claimed.

The deficit cuts may come up short of balance, but the White House noted they are still very ambitious.
