Controversial Chinese Audi ad compares wives to used cars

CHINA-ASIA-ECONOMY-AUTO-SHOW-AUTOMOBILE

Audi is facing controversy in China over a commercial that directly compares getting married to the process of checking out a used vehicle.

The commercial, for Audi's pre-owned auto sales website, shows a bride about to get married before the groom's mother marches over to inspect her nose, ears and teeth.

In the 30-second advert, a serene outdoor wedding is interrupted when the groom's mother rushes to the podium, checking out the bride's eyes, before pinching her nose and ears, and pulling open her mouth to check on teeth.

The ad finishes by cutting away to an Audi driving along with the words: "An important decision must be made carefully".

The ad was surprising coming from Audi, given that other Audi ads have attempted to tackle gender stereotypes, and the automaker even addressed equal pay for women during its Super Bowl ad.

Maryam Mirzakhani, prize-winning mathematician, dies at 40
"It is fun - like solving a puzzle or connecting the dots in a detective case", she said when she won the Fields Medal . Mirzakhani was born in Tehran, Iran on May 3, 1977, and she quickly displayed an unbelievable talent for math.

The ad ends with a plug for used Audi vehicles, with the male narrator saying: "Only with official certification can you be rest assured".

A growing number of Chinese consumers have taken to Weibo, China's Twitter, to slam the German carmaker.

Audi didn't immediately respond to an email, and Ogilvy China declined to comment. Viewers are then directed towards Audi's second hand auto sales website. Audi's sales dropped 12 percent in the first half of the year in China during a dispute with dealers.

Lotus may become the latest western marque to shift some production to China, Bloomberg reports, after China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group announced plans to purchase stakes in Malaysian.

"I will not buy an Audi in this lifetime", one user said, and another called it "disastrous marketing".
