Parents release new picture they say proves Charlie Gard isn't blind

Two international experts to attend meeting in Charlie Gard case

A USA doctor flew into the U.K. Monday alongside other medical experts to examine Charlie Gard and determine Gard's chances of improvement with treatment.

Gard and his family have been at the center of an global debate over whether governments can make life and death decisions for individuals.

The US is opening its arms to a terminally ill British baby by offering him and his parents permanent residency to allow them to seek treatment in America.

Charlie's parents and his hospital are involved in an on-going legal battle over his medical care. "He's even trying to move his hips", Estopinan said.

Now, Congress has made a decision to make Charlie a permanent member of the United States in an attempt to get Charlie the nucleoside therapy that could save his life.

Because Hirano has been developing a therapy that could potentially be used for Gard's specific brand of mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome (in the past, the therapy has been used on similar conditions), the doctor has been in the United Kingdom this week to evaluate the boy and to determine whether Gard can withstand the treatment and the traveling that would be required to carry it out.

This comes ahead of further court hearings expected at the end of this week, and a ruling on Charlie's future care next week.

US expert 'fails to get Charlie Gard's doctors to reconsider': Neuroscientist is unable to talk round medics as critcally ill baby's parents release new photo in response to claims he is blind

Mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome is a progressive disease that causes muscle weakness and loss of motor skills, leaving those who have it unable to stand, walk, eat, talk and eventually breathe.

Dr Michio Hirano, a neuroscientist from Columbia University in NY, is said to have spent over five hours trying to convince doctors, along with an expert from a Vatican hospital in Rome. We are at his bedside and feel satisfied he is not suffering or in any pain. And don't forget, a US hospital has offered to spare the family the ordeal of traveling by bringing the experimental drug to London so that Charlie can be treated there.

But his parents have raised more than $1.8 million to bring Charlie either to the USA or to Rome for treatment, and they are fighting the British government for permission even to take Charlie out of the country using their own money.

But now they hoping Dr Hirano will present "new evidence relating to potential treatment for his condition" to the UK High Court. Hirano has given Charlie up to a 56 percent chance of "meaningful improvement" following his experimental therapy. They raised more than $1 million for his care, and said they want to give Charlie every chance at life.

Dr. Michio Hirano, a neuroscientist at the Columbia University Medical Center and a leading expert on Charlie's condition, has been tested on a limited number of patients and none with Charlie's type of disease, according to the BBC.

Charlie's parents have been in a four-month legal battle over their rights as parents to determine the type of treatments their son can have.

She said: 'Our gorgeous baby boy is still stable.
