Truck driver killed, banks set ablaze in Apapa

Mob sets banks ablaze as policeman ‘kills’ tanker driver

An eyewitness in the area said other banks have closed down for business to avoid being attacked by the truckers as tension brew in the area, especially banks on Warehouse Road.

"The police man ran into sterling bank seeking refuge with the mobile unit attached to the bank, the angry mob then set fire to a vehicle within the bank premises which slightly affected the building".

Seaport operations at the Lagos Ports Complex (LPC) was brought to a halt on Wednesday morning when a mobile policeman attached to Diamond Bank located at Creek road shot and killed a truck driver simply identified as Tunde for refusing to part with a token of N200 as bribe.

Korodo made the denial against reports that some tanker drivers were shot dead during a fracas involving some policemen during which two banks were set ablaze.

Attempts by men of the Lagos State Fire Service, Iponri, who rushed to the scene to put out the fire, were rebuffed by the tanker drivers.

The corpse of the dead truck driver was said to have been deposited at the Apapa General Hospital.

"We were not the ones that set the banks ablaze, hoodlums did".

A senior police officer said on condition of anonymity: "Those tanker drivers are very irrational". The rioters were seen molesting bank staff and customers before the security officers arrived. Angered by the killing, the tanker drivers regrouped, and after setting the bank ablaze, they also burned a branch of Sterling Bank.

According to reports, the mob set the bank on fire after the management failed to release the security officer who was hiding inside the bank to them.

"The security operatives attached to the branch prevented the mob from entering the branch while evacuating staff and customers before the arrival of police reinforcement. He ran into the premises of the bank to escape being lynched", the statement read.

Afe said, "We had a fire incident at our branch office on Creek Road, Apapa which severely damaged branch infrastructure as a result of mob action".

The policemen who were attached to the bank at first approached them to give access to the bank's customers to come in and carry out their financial activities. "Sterling Bank is working with security agencies to resolve the issue".
