Jordan: Israeli embassy officer attacked; government standoff ensues

Jordanian street voices anger over Al Aqsa restrictions

Police deployed to the scene and surrounded the area, the statement said, adding that the two Jordanians had gone into the building to carry out "carpentry work".

The heavily protected embassy is located in the Rabiyeh neighbourhood, an affluent part of Amman.

Violence has flared between Israeli security forces and Palestinians who are demanding that Israel remove metal detectors installed outside the site after the attack.

Israel's said its decision to enhance security came after two border police officers were killed in an attack at the compound a week ago.

Donald Trump approval rating lowest of any president since WWII
The Post-ABC poll was conducted July 10-13 among a random national sample of 1,001 adults reached on cellular and landline phones. The survey showed that 82 percent of Republicans approved of Trump versus just 11 percent among Democrats.

The statement said the PSD launched an extensive investigation into the incident and informed the Public Prosecution in order to find out all details and circumstances in accordance with legal procedures followed in such cases.

No doubt this extremely serious event will complicate the already strained relationship between Jordan and Israel, entangled in sensitive regional negotiations to resolve the Jerusalem Temple Mount crisis and stabilize the situation.

The incident comes against a background of tension over the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

Tensions have been high since Israel set up new measures after Arab gunmen earlier this month opened fire from the site, killing two Israeli policemen. She says the 21-year-old attacker is a Palestinian working illegally in Israel.

"I assured the security guard that we will see to bringing him back to Israel; we have experience in this", Netanyahu said in advance of a phone call with Jordan's King Abdullah.

It has always been a flashpoint of anti-Israeli protests at times of turmoil in the Palestinian territories.

Muslim leaders alleged Israel was trying to expand its control at the site under the guise of security, a claim Israel has denied. During those riots, three Palestinians were killed, and dozens injured.
