Parents Dosed Newborn to Mask Her Addiction: Cops

Wilde is seen with his infant son in 2012. He was charged with child abuse last month after police said he dropped his daughter repeatedly during a bungled Walmart shoplifting

On June 28, a woman who went to care for the pets at the couple's home found drug paraphernalia and immediately called authorities.

Wilde and Christenson, 26, were initially arrested on June 26 in connection with a theft at a local Walmart, according to the sheriff's office.

Police also listed theft and child abuse as possible charges. When the staff in the store attempted to stop him, he ran away carrying his two-month-old daughter. Christenson, who was with her three other children at the Walmart, was also arrested on an outstanding warrant.

"It makes me sick to my stomach, for a number of reasons", said Sgt. Spencer Cannon, a spokesperson for the Utah County Sheriff's, told CBS News.

It was during this investigation process that authorities learned about Christenson's heavy drug use during pregnancy and the subsequant damage done to her newborn baby. They also said they found drug paraphernalia throughout the house, including next to the baby's bassinet and next to a child's sippy cup.

Christenson was in the store at the time with her other children, all under the age of 8. Utah County police confirmed that the infant was born already addicted to hard drugs.

Wilde crushed pills of Suboxone, a drug used to treat heroin addiction and withdrawal, and forced the powder down his daughter's throat. Police officials caught Wilde, and he was charged with driving under the influence, possession of methamphetamine and heroin, driving without insurance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. DCFS became involved in the case, having all four children tested for drugs.

They are now being held in a county jail on a $10,000 cash bail.

Because all four children, who had been living in the home, could be in risky proximity to the paraphernalia and prescription pills Deputies added four counts each for Wilde and Christenson of child endangerment, a third-degree felony.

Babies are being born suffering from drug addiction withdrawals at a historic pace, increasing five-fold across the US between 2003 and 2012. He learned from DCFS that the two younger boys and the infant girl all tested positive for methamphetamine. Wilde and Christenson told investigators they talked to friends about how to mask signs of drug dependence in an infant, and that they discussed this issue with each other.

When put under tests, the new born tested positive for methamphetamine, heroin and morphine.

A spokesman for the Utah County Sheriff Department said: 'Christenson admitted to investigators that the crushed Suboxone found in their home was the substance used to administer Suboxone to their newborn daughter on April 9 in Utah Valley Hospital. $10,000 cash bail has been set for both parents. Wilde posted $7,5000 bond on July 5 and was freed, according to the Utah County Sheriff's Office.

Police managed to stop his vehicle and arrest Wilde, who was charged with suspicion of DUI, possession of heroin and methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and having no insurance. Acting on a tip, police visited their house on July 18 with a search warrant, only to find Wilde smoking heroin.
