Wildfires ravage parts of the Riviera and Corsica

Disastrous fire breaks out in Southern France

Fires in Luberon destroyed almost 2,000 acres, and those in Carros destroyed 20 acres before they were under control.

Firefighters have stepped up their battle against flames lapping at Mediterranean forests in the picturesque French hilltop town of Bormes-Les-Mimosas, where at least 10,000 people were evacuated.

The fire in the seaside town of Bormes-Les-Mimosas in the southern Var region calmed on Thursday because of a drop in the wind - but still marked the skyline with dramatic clouds of black smoke that were visible for miles.

Some 3,000 firefighters have been deployed to contain fires that broke out earlier this week in the southeast and on the island of Corsica.

Thousands of people were evacuated and huge areas of vegetation destroyed by forest fires which have raged in south eastern France and Corsica over the past week.

Over 6,000 firefighters, troops, soldiers and civil security soldiers have been involved in the effort to tame the blazes.

The wildfires began raging along France's Mediterranean coast on Monday, forcing smaller, scattered evacuations as flames reached a corner of Saint-Tropez. "We are going to do everything to find the people responsible for this fire". The flames are being driven by powerful winds across steep hillsides of dense pine and eucalyptus forest Wednesday.

The Civil Protection Agency reports it has deployed more than 1,100 firefighters and 23 water-dropping aircraft to 13 blazes.

Firefighters have contained one of the largest fires in southern France and authorities have cleared thousands of evacuees to return to their homes and campsites. The worst-affected areas continued to be in the central region of the country, especially a fire around Serta, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) northeast of Lisbon, which was burning for a fifth day.

One wildfire last month in Portugal killed 64 people.

Nearly 1,000 other firefighters are conducting mopping-up operations at 37 other Portuguese woodland blazes Wednesday.

Spokesman Ardian Bita says fires are blazing in five western and central districts, damaging 15 hectares (37 acres) of pastures, vineyards and dozens of olive trees. Coldiretti said another 20 percent of the bee population is estimated to have become disoriented by all the smoke and died as a result.
