Khamenei, Rouhani Disagree over Iran's Priorities

Iran President Hassan Rouhani vows to end isolation as he begins his second term

President Robert Mugabe has left for Tehran, to attend the swearing in ceremony of Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani on Saturday.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei formally endorsed Hassan Rohani as president for a second term.

"The nuclear deal is a sign of Iran's goodwill on the worldwide stage", he said, referring to the 2015 agreement to curb its atomic programme in exchange for an easing of sanctions.

The 68-year-old cleric kissed the Koran and took the oath of office before parliament, senior politicians and foreign dignitaries in Tehran on Saturday, promising to serve his people, protect individual rights and defend the country. "Now in Iran, there is a growing debate if these sanctions violate [the nuclear deal] or not".

"We will never accept isolation", Rouhani told a packed audience of Iranian political and military officials in Tehran.

"The nuclear deal is a sign of Iran's goodwill on the worldwide stage", he added. "The world should know that any abrogation pertaining to the agreement would face the unanimous reaction of the nation and the government of Iran".

Venezuela will vote Sunday to elect a new ruling assembly
The state prosecutor's office said late on Friday 18-year-old Gustavo Villamizar had become the latest victim of protest violence. Opposition leaders are urging Venezuelans to boycott Sunday's election for delegates to an assembly to rewrite the constitution.

"The US' lack of commitment to implementation of the nuclear deal. proved it to be an unreliable partner to the world and even to its longtime allies", Rouhani said in comments broadcast live on state television.

Among the guests were European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, who has vowed to continue building ties with Iran despite mounting pressure from the United States to keep the Islamic republic isolated. According to Rouhani, the Trump and Obama administrations "became addicted to the policies of sanctions and threats, policies that are illegal and ineffective, thus showing the world that they are unreliable".

Trump has expressed skepticism about the nuclear agreement, which significantly reduced the scope of Iran's nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions, and has sought other ways to keep the pressure on Tehran.

Rouhani won a convincing victory over Ebrahim Raisi in the May presidential election, promising to continue rebuilding ties with the West and easing social restrictions at home.

Last month the United States announced new sanctions over Iran's missile programme and alleged support for terror groups. French company Total defied USA pressure in July by signing a multibillion-dollar gas deal with Iran. Officials from over 90 countries attended the event. Rouhani has to announce his new cabinet members to Parliament within 14 days.
