Zuma Vote: Opposition parties argue their case

Is it endgame for Jacob Zuma?

SOUTH Africa's president Jacob Zuma survived a no-confidence vote yesterday and insisted his African National Congress party was united and would not be toppled.

South African parliament began debate in the no-confidence motion against Zuma, with both treasury and opposition benches making speeches in support of their respective arguments.

The parliamentary speaker on Monday ruled the vote would be by secret ballot - a decision the opposition hoped would embolden ANC members who are unhappy with Mr Zuma to vote against him.

Previous attempts in parliament to unseat Zuma over accusations of corruption and cronyism had been carried out through public votes.

There were nine abstentions in the secret ballot.

Constitutional expert Pierre de Vos at the University of Cape Town says the rest of the administration would continue its work for an interim period of up to 30 days until the country's chief justice convenes a special parliament session to elect a new president.

"The ANC is there, is powerful, is big". The opposition 'is trying and trying but it will never defeat the ANC, ' he assured. "It is their own imagination", Zuma added. There is also the fear that many will lose the protection the president gave them in terms of position deployment and self-enrichment.

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane's earlier plead with ANC Members of MPs to "do the right thing" and help remove President Jacob Zuma from office.

"It does not make sense to overthrow Zuma now - get rid of Zuma now and that throws leadership bids up in the air", he said. Following the weak results during the regional elections in August 2016 the ANC is under pressure. He is mortally wounded, and his party is in tatters.

However, the fact that the vote will now be held in secret presents an outside chance that those MPs who have been voiceless or fearful thus far will vote with the opposition. But they were held via open ballots, forcing members of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) to toe the party line.

Opposition parties have been urging ANC MPs to vote with the consciences in the motion.

The Opposition accuses Mr Zuma of corruption and mismanagement, but the embattled leader celebrated his victory and thanked his supporters.
